US ice hockey star Brady has said he does not appreciate an AI video released by the White House that shows him insulting Canadians.<\/p>\n

Tkachuk played in the Americans\u2019 victory over Canada<\/a> at the Winter Olympics on Sunday, which secured the US men their first gold medal since 1980. In the wake of that win, the White House\u2019s TikTok account published video of Tkachuk saying: \u201cThey booed our national anthem, so I had to come out and teach those maple syrup eating fuckers a lesson.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tkachuk never said those words and the video, which has had more than 10m views, is labelled as AI-generated.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, it\u2019s clearly fake, because it\u2019s not my voice, not my lips moving,\u201d Tkachuk said on Thursday. \u201cI\u2019m not in control of any of those accounts. I know that those words would never come out of my mouth. So, I can\u2019t do anything about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tkachuk has good reason to distance himself from the video: he plays in the Canadian capital, where he is captain of the Ottawa Senators<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not my voice. It\u2019s not what I was saying,\u201d he continued. \u201cI would never say that. That\u2019s not who I am, so I guess I don\u2019t like that video because that would never come out of my mouth and never had that thought.\u201d<\/p>\n

Donald Trump called<\/a> the US team after their win and some believe Tkachuk could be heard shouting \u201cClose the northern border\u201d as the president congratulated the team. He denied those claims on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been seeing stuff that people think it\u2019s me. But if you watch the video, it\u2019s not my voice or something that I never say,\u201d Tkachuk said. \u201cI don\u2019t know how that took a storm on its own when I give everything I have here. It\u2019s crazy when things go on social media, how fast they go. I would never say anything like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fallout from Trump\u2019s call, which was captured on video, does not end there. The president was accused of making a joke at the expense of the US women\u2019s team during the call, when he invited the men\u2019s players to the White House to celebrate their gold medal.<\/p>\n

\u201cI must tell you, we\u2019re going to have to bring the women\u2019s team, you do know that,\u201d Trump said before laughing and adding he would be \u201cimpeached\u201d if he didn\u2019t. Some players laughed at the joke. The US women also won gold at this year\u2019s Olympics.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, US women\u2019s captain Hilary Knight called the joke<\/a> \u201cdistasteful\u201d. On Thursday, Tkachuk said he understood why Knight and her teammates would be insulted by Trump\u2019s comments and some of the players\u2019 reactions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, I get it,\u201d he said. \u201cWe support them, they support us. You can\u2019t control what other people say. It was fun being around them, seeing how they play and the excellence around them. If I see one of them, we\u2019ll talk about the excitement of what we can control, which is to be gold medalists.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tkachuk said the laughter from his teammates at Trump\u2019s comments may have come because they were caught off guard. \u201cYou\u2019re talking to the President 10 minutes after you achieve your dream,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Tkachuk was among the 20 US men\u2019s players who visited Trump at the White House after their victory. The women\u2019s team declined the invitation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was special,\u201d Tkachuk said of the visit. \u201cBeing an American citizen, you never really think you\u2019re going to see the White House and be in the Oval Office.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
