The company rolled out ads <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/02\/09\/chatgpt-rolls-out-ads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to U.S.-based users earlier this month<\/a> amid criticism from rivals like Anthropic, which published <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/02\/04\/sam-altman-got-exceptionally-testy-over-claude-super-bowl-ads\/#:~:text=own%20chatbot%2C%20Claude.-,Another%20commercial,-features%20a%20slight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a string of Super Bowl ads<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the sidelines of the India AI summit, TechCrunch asked <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/02\/24\/openai-coo-says-we-have-not-yet-really-seen-ai-penetrate-enterprise-business-processes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap<\/a> about how the company is approaching ads. Lightcap said that the process is iterative and the company has to get user privacy and trust right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell, this is going to be an iterative process for sure. This is something we are committed to getting right.\u00a0What does that look like?\u00a0It means obviously maintaining user trust at a very high level.\u00a0It means getting privacy right,\u201d Lightcap said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also noted that ads can add to the product experience of users if they are done right. More Texans use ChatGPT for free than the total number of people who use Claude in the US, so we have a differently-shaped problem than they do,\u201d Altman wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/media\/exclusive-openai-confirms-200000-minimum-commitment-for-chatgpt-ads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Various<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/articles\/openai-lines-advertisers-reveals-key-details-ahead-ads-launch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">outlets<\/a> have reported that OpenAI is charging $60 for 1,000 impressions, an unusually high rate. Last month, Adweek noted that OpenAI is asking for $200,000 of minimum commitment from advertisers.
