{"id":25332,"date":"2026-02-26T08:37:20","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T08:37:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=25332"},"modified":"2026-02-26T08:37:20","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T08:37:20","slug":"home-office-denies-absurd-criticism-over-rule-change-that-could-leave-dual-nationals-stranded-home-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=25332","title":{"rendered":"Home Office denies \u2018absurd\u2019 criticism over rule change that could leave dual nationals stranded | Home Office"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/home-office\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Home Office<\/a> has dismissed as \u201cabsurd\u201d claims that it failed to properly communicate new border rules that left some British dual nationals at risk of being denied boarding flights to the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">During a heated session in parliament on Wednesday, the Home Office minister Mike Tapp suggested that media coverage in the Guardian and BBC reflected the department\u2019s efforts to publicise the changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Labour backbencher Kerry McCarthy described how two of her constituents feared being stranded on their honeymoon because of the new requirements, which came into force on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Under the changes, British dual nationals must present a valid or expired British passport, or a \u00a3589 certificate of entitlement, to prove their right of abode before boarding a plane, ferry or train to the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThey don\u2019t know if they can actually get back into the UK from [their] honeymoon,\u201d McCarthy said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Conservative MP Alicia Kearns said the policy was justified but urged Tapp to \u201ccommit, however, to improve the communications plan, which has been insufficient\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Tapp rejected calls for a grace period but said he would host a drop-in session with MPs next Monday to discuss individual cases. He added that consular services were available overseas to help stranded Britons, and dual nationals would obtain a passport within four weeks \u2013 and in some cases nine days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Liberal Democrats\u2019 immigration spokesperson, Will Forster, accused Tapp of \u201clack of planning and haphazard communication\u201d, calling the situation unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Tapp responded: \u201cI find the framing of this absolutely absurd \u2013 it is nonsense. There have been years in planning from the officials and ministers. This has been in the public domain for some years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cFor those looking to travel for emergencies, there are emergency travel documents, and I urge them to explore that through the government website to see if they are eligible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The former Conservative cabinet minister David Davis said three of his constituents had only learned about the changes through media reports in the Guardian and the BBC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI\u2019m going to let him into a little secret here \u2013 perhaps that media coverage is as a result of the Home Office\u2019s efforts to get this information out there as widely as we possibly can,\u201d Tapp replied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Guardian\u2019s reporting was prompted by letters from anxious dual nationals abroad.
