Grace Tame has said \u201cwe all know what you meant\u201d after Anthony Albanese<\/a> claimed he meant to describe her \u201cdifficult life\u201d when he labelled her \u201cdifficult\u201d.<\/p>\n

Speaking in Melbourne on Thursday morning, the prime minister said he had not meant to describe Tame as \u201cdifficult\u201d at a News Corp event on Wednesday, when he was asked to describe public figures in one word. Instead he meant that her life had been \u201cdifficult\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

But Tame, an outspoken advocate for sexual abuse survivors and the 2021 Australian of the Year, hit back on Thursday afternoon, suggesting Albanese was \u201cquoting\u201d the former prime minister Scott Morrison.<\/p>\n

\u201cDude\u2019s quoting Scott now!!! \u2018She\u2019s had a difficult life\u2019\u2026 Spare me the condescension, old man,\u201d she commented on a social media post by independent media company Ette about Albanese\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all know what you meant. A badge of honour anyway. A confession that I\u2019ve ruffled him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tame had earlier reshared a social media post to her Instagram story, saying: \u201c\u2018Difficult\u2019 is the misogynist\u2019s code for a woman who won\u2019t comply. History tends to call her \u2018courageous\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another post she shared said: \u201c[Tame] is so difficult, she is more powerful than the opposition.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Albanese said: \u201cI was asked to describe people in one word and Grace Tame<\/a> you certainly can\u2019t describe in one word.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe has had a difficult life, and that was what I was referring to.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there was any misinterpretation, then I certainly apologise. I think that Grace Tame has taken what is personal trauma and that awful experience that she had and channelled that into helping, in particular, other young women, being a strong and powerful advocate, being quite courageous in the way that she has gone out there.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that he did not agree with comments Tame made at protests<\/a> against the visit of the Israeli president, Isaac Herzog, in early February.<\/p>\n

Tame was filmed leading a chat \u201cfrom Gadigal to Gaza, globalise the intifada\u201d at one of the rallies. Critics, including the opposition leader, Angus Taylor, have demanded that the prime minister condemn Tame for her comments while others argued she should be stripped of her Australian of the Year award.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow there are other issues, such as the language that Grace Tame used, that I disagree with, at the demonstration that was held in Sydney,\u201d Albanese said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo that\u2019s why it\u2019s impossible to describe people in one word, and that wasn\u2019t meant to be taken that way, it was certainly just a word that comes to mind when different people are mentioned.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comment has drawn criticism from the Greens leader, Larissa Waters, who said the prime minister\u2019s description was \u201ccompletely unwarranted\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cLabelling women as difficult won\u2019t silence us,\u201d she wrote on X. \u201cIt won\u2019t stop us speaking truth to power. Next time try \u2018unbreakable\u2019 or \u2018warrior\u2019 or \u2018fierce\u2019, prime minister.\u201d<\/p>\n

Waters\u2019 upper house colleague Sarah Hanson-Young thanked all the \u201cdifficult women\u201d for the right to vote, to run for parliament, to open a bank account and to buy a house.<\/p>\n

Hannah Ferguson, an online media commentator, was particularly critical in a video posted to Instagram, describing Albanese as a \u201cbootlicker\u201d, \u201cpiss-weak\u201d and a \u201cuser\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cPut simply, Anthony Albanese has departed from any principles he once claimed to have as he follows Pauline [Hanson] down the road to the right,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s all that\u2019s happening right now, a calculated pivot as he sees her number surge.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat Albo and whoever\u2019s advising him forget is that Australians care most about someone having principles and standing by them \u2013 we can smell a disingenuous person from a mile away.\u201d<\/p>\n
