In response, four countries, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spain_in_the_Eurovision_Song_Contest\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest\">Spain<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Netherlands_in_the_Eurovision_Song_Contest\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest\">the Netherlands<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ireland_in_the_Eurovision_Song_Contest\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest\">Ireland<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slovenia_in_the_Eurovision_Song_Contest\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Slovenia in the Eurovision Song Contest\">Slovenia<\/a> withdrew from the 2026 contest, citing a &#8220;loss&#8221; of neutrality and the humanitarian impact due to the war in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gaza\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Gaza\">Gaza<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RT%C3%89\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:RT\u00c9\">RT\u00c9<\/a><\/span>, the broadcaster for Ireland, said that participating in the 2026 edition was &#8220;unconscionable&#8221; due to the &#8220;humanitarian crisis&#8221; in Gaza as well as the large number of deaths there. Taco Zimmerman, the chief executive of <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AVROTROS\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:AVROTROS\">AVROTROS<\/a><\/span>, the broadcaster for the Netherlands, stated that &#8220;Culture unites, but not at any price.&#8221; Jos\u00e9 Pablo L\u00f3pez, president of <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RTVE\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:RTVE\">RTVE<\/a><\/span>, Spain&#8217;s broadcaster, opined that &#8220;what happened at the EBU Assembly confirms that Eurovision is not a song contest but a festival dominated by geopolitical interests.&#8221; Natalija Gor\u0161?ak, the president of <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Radiotelevizija_Slovenija\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Radiotelevizija Slovenija\">Radiotelevizija Slovenija<\/a><\/span>, Slovenia&#8217;s broadcaster, said that Israel and Hamas&#8217; ceasefire agreement was &#8220;not a real&#8221; one due to ongoing casualties. Meanwhile, <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/R%C3%9AV\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:R\u00daV\">R\u00daV<\/a><\/span>, the Icelandic broadcaster, contemplated if Iceland should participate in the 2026 contest.\n<\/p>\n<p>According to <i><span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Politico\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Politico\">Politico<\/a><\/span><\/i>, the four withdrawals generated major turmoil; <i><span class=\"interwiki-link-local\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikinews.org\/wiki\/CNN\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"CNN\">CNN<\/a><\/span><\/i> noted Spain is a part of the &#8220;Big Five,&#8221; comprising the five biggest financial generators of the competition. <i><span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Newsweek\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Newsweek\">Newsweek<\/a><\/span><\/i> reported that the withdrawals were the largest &#8220;upheaval&#8221; in the Eurovision Song Contest.\n<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the broadcaster for Radiotelevizija Slovenija reported that they requested a secret vote along with Spain, the Netherlands, Montenegro, Turkey, Algeria, and Iceland, but the vote was not held. Instead, officials in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Geneva\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Geneva\">Geneva<\/a> passed new rules limiting governments from influencing the results of the contest. The officials also implemented a limit of 10 public votes &#8220;per payment method&#8221;, which RTVE called &#8220;insufficient&#8221;.\n<\/p>\n<p><i><span class=\"interwiki-link-local\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikinews.org\/wiki\/CNN\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"CNN\">CNN<\/a><\/span><\/i> and <i><span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rappler\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Rappler\">Rappler<\/a><\/span><\/i> reported that some countries, namely Austria, the host of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2026, Germany, France, Britain, Portugal, and Sweden, supported the inclusion of Israel in the 2026 edition of the contest.\n<\/p>\n<p>Golan Yochpaz, the chief executive of the <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Israeli_Public_Broadcasting_Corporation\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation\">Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation<\/a><\/span>, called it a \u201ccultural boycott.\u201d Israeli Foreign Minister <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gideon_Sa%27ar\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Gideon Sa'ar\">Gideon Sa&#8217;ar<\/a><\/span> articulated his shame for countries boycotting the contest.\n<\/p>\n<p>Ben Robertson from Eurovision fansite <i>ESC Insight<\/i> highlighted that &#8220;never in the history of the contest have we had such a vote, and such a split, between the member broadcasters of the European Broadcasting Union.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>Israel reached second place, securing the largest public vote in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eurovision_Song_Contest_2025\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Eurovision Song Contest 2025\">Eurovision 2025<\/a> when <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yuval_Raphael\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Yuval Raphael\">Yuval Raphael<\/a><\/span> performed &#8220;<span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Day_Will_Rise\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:New Day Will Rise\">New Day Will Rise<\/a><\/span>&#8220;. Riot police were deployed in Basel due to large protests by Palestinian demonstrators against Israel&#8217;s participation.
