{"id":24342,"date":"2026-02-23T09:23:27","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T09:23:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=24342"},"modified":"2026-02-23T09:23:27","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T09:23:27","slug":"bill-keltys-tax-reform-comments-cast-a-harsh-light-on-labors-lack-of-ambition-australian-greens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=24342","title":{"rendered":"Bill Kelty\u2019s tax reform comments cast a harsh light on Labor\u2019s lack of ambition | Australian Greens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The first day of the Greens\u2019 parliamentary inquiry into the capital gains tax was dominated by a bloke in his late 70s imploring parliamentarians to show \u201cunequivocally that they\u2019re on the side of young people\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Not just any bloke, of course, but Bill Kelty: union legend, co-architect of the economic reforms of the 1980s and 90s, former Reserve Bank board member, and self-proclaimed rich guy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Kelty told the committee that he supported scaling back the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/feb\/05\/capital-gains-tax-discount-to-cost-australia-250bn-over-next-decade-with-retirees-and-high-income-earners-to-benefit-most\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">50% capital gains tax discount for investors<\/a> \u2013 something Jim Chalmers is apparently considering for the upcoming budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">If he\u2019d stopped there, it would have been happy days for the treasurer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But Kelty is from a different generation of Labor bigwigs, one that derides this government\u2019s timid strategy to break economic reform down into \u201cbite-size chunks\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Australians are hungry for a full buffet of tax reform, he reckons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"><sub class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/sub><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He insisted any changes to the CGT discount had to be part of a broader reform effort that changes the tax system so it takes the burden off younger shoulders and makes a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/feb\/06\/capital-gains-tax-discount-debate-australia-house-prices\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">meaningful difference<\/a> to their lived experience and aspiration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe nub of the problem is the tax system for young people \u2013 you have to fix that. Well, it doesn\u2019t make a difference to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said simply scaling back tax breaks for investors to pay for some extra spending was not good enough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhat\u2019s it for? To increase expenditure and spend it on Aukus? They go to extremity, they go to parties of hate, they go to the parties of division. And it\u2019s not just a bad thing for the Liberal party \u2026 it\u2019s a very bad thing for this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Cutting tax breaks for investors will be something and should be applauded.
