After accusing the former president of confirming aliens exist, President Donald Trump has announced he will be releasing government records related to aliens and any unidentified flying objects.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cBased on the tremendous interest shown, I will be directing the Secretary of War, and other relevant Departments and Agencies, to begin the process of identifying and releasing Government files related to alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and unidentified flying objects (UFOs), and any and all other information connected to these highly complex, but extremely interesting and important, matters,\u201d Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s post came hours after he condemned former President Barack Obama of disclosing classified information after the former president said aliens are \u201creal\u201d on a podcast last week.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re real,\u201d Obama told podcast host Brian Tyler Cohen. \u201cBut I haven\u2019t seen them, and they\u2019re not being kept in Area 51. There\u2019s no underground facility, unless there\u2019s this enormous conspiracy, and they hid it from the president of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n
Obama\u2019s comments quickly spread online, prompting the former president to issue a clarification on Sunday on Instagram.<\/p>\n
\u201cStatistically, the universe is so vast that the odds are good there\u2019s life out there,\u201d he said. \u201cBut the distances between solar systems are so great that the chances we\u2019ve been visited by aliens is low, and I saw no evidence during my presidency that extraterrestrials have made contact with us.\u201d<\/p>\n
The clarification did little to stop Trump from taking another jab. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Thursday, Trump said Obama \u201cmade a big mistake.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cHe gave classified information; he\u2019s not supposed to be doing that,\u201d Trump told reporters. \u201cHe made a big mistake \u2026 He took it out of classified information.\u201d<\/p>\n
In admonishing the former president, Trump suggested Obama\u2019s comments were classified, but offered to throw him a helping hand. \u201cI may get him out of trouble by declassifying.\u201d Trump added that while he doesn\u2019t \u201chave an opinion on it,\u201d he knows there\u2019s an overwhelming number of people who believe it.<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s comments on declassification are not new. In October 2022, two months after FBI agents seized boxes of materials from his Mar-a-Lago home, the then-former president questioned a president\u2019s or former president\u2019s legal authority to declassify sensitive information.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He later added to the confusion when he said in an interview there really is no such thing as classified information.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere doesn\u2019t have to be a process, as I understand it,\u201d he told Fox host Sean Hannity. \u201cIf you\u2019re the president of the United States you can declassify just by saying it\u2019s declassified. Even by thinking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Many national security legal experts dismissed Trump\u2019s suggestion he could declassify documents just by thinking of them. In what later became one of the turning points in Trump\u2019s second bid for reelection, the former president was charged with multiple counts of obstruction of justice and retention of national defense information. After Trump\u2019s election win in 2024, a federal judge in Florida dismissed the case, ruling the special counsel was improperly appointed.<\/p>\n
Trump himself was asked what his thoughts were on aliens. In June 2019 he said he was briefed on Navy UFO reports but expressed doubts.<\/p>\n
\u201cI did have one very brief meeting on it,\u201d he told ABC News. \u201cPeople are saying they\u2019re seeing UFOs. Do I believe it? Not particularly.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
