Meta has announced<\/a> a major update for its immersive virtual world, Horizon Worlds, on Thursday that will see it leave the metaverse behind. The tech giant said it\u2019s shifting focus for Horizons Worlds to be \u201calmost exclusively mobile\u201d and that it\u2019s\u00a0\u201cexplicitly separating\u201d its Quest VR platform from the virtual world.<\/p>\n Meta\u2019s Reality Labs division for VR and smart glasses development has lost nearly $80 billion<\/a> since 2020. The update to Horizon Worlds, and other recent moves, signal that Meta is significantly rethinking its VR ambitions.<\/p>\n Last month, the company reportedly laid off\u00a0roughly 1,500 employees<\/a>\u00a0from its Reality Labs division \u2014 about 10% of the unit\u2019s staff \u2014 and shut down<\/a> several VR game studios. Additionally, it was reported that the VR fitness app Supernatural, which Meta acquired<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a02023, will no longer produce new content and will move into \u201cmaintenance mode.\u201d <\/p>\n Horizon Worlds originally launched in 2021 as a VR platform and later rolled out<\/a> to the web and mobile. Meta said Thursday that to\u00a0\u201ctruly change the game and tap into a much larger market, we\u2019re going all-in on mobile.\u201d<\/p>\n By going mobile-first, Horizon Worlds is positioning itself to compete with popular platforms like Roblox and Fortnite.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re in a strong position to deliver synchronous social games at scale, thanks to our unique ability to connect those games with billions of people on the world\u2019s biggest social networks,\u201d Samantha Ryan, Reality Labs\u2019 VP of content, said in a blog post. \u201cYou saw this strategy start to unfold in 2025, and now, it\u2019s our main focus.\u201d<\/p>\n Ryan went on to note that Meta is still focused on VR hardware. <\/p>\n Techcrunch event<\/p>\n \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBoston, MA<\/span> \u201cWe have a robust roadmap of future VR headsets that will be tailored to different audience segments as the market grows and matures,\u201d Ryan wrote. <\/p>\n Meta\u2019s metaverse ambitions have effectively been abandoned in favor of AI. After shifting its Reality Labs investments away from the metaverse<\/a>, Meta is now focused on developing AI wearables and advancing its own AI models<\/a>. <\/p>\n During Meta\u2019s latest earnings call last month, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said<\/a>, \u201cIt\u2019s hard to imagine a world in several years where most glasses that people wear aren\u2019t AI glasses.\u201d<\/p>\n The exec also stated that sales of Meta\u2019s glasses tripled within the last year, calling them \u201csome of the fastest growing consumer electronics in history.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
