<\/figure>\nThe Scotsman has undergone many changes since the 1980s<\/em><\/p>\n After visiting the hotel which had taken over The Scotsman<\/em>\u2018s former offices on North Bridge, Chris Baur, who edited the paper in the mid-1980s, joked that his former deputy\u2019s office had been turned into a toilet.<\/p>\n It was a quip made with a sense of humour and a reflection on how the paper had lost some of its status in departing its grand headquarters in the heart of Edinburgh.<\/p>\n Mr Baur, who has died aged 83, also worked for the Financial Times<\/em>, the BBC and Scottish Business Insider<\/em>.<\/p>\n He joined\u00a0The Scotsman<\/em>\u00a0as a copy boy in 1960 and trained as a journalist, becoming the industrial reporter in 1963 as well as covering Scottish politics from 1972.<\/p>\n In 1973 he was appointed Scottish correspondent of the\u00a0Financial Times<\/em>\u00a0and political correspondent of\u00a0BBC Scotland?<\/sup>\u00a0During this period, he made a programme for\u00a0BBC Two\u00a0called \u201cPower of Scotland\u201d which won the\u00a0Royal Television Society\u2019s Journalism Award for the \u2018best current affairs documentary programme\u2019 of 1978.<\/p>\n In 1978 he became an assistant editor at\u00a0The Scotsman<\/em>, writing on politics and economic affairs. He became deputy editor, before being appointed editor between 1985 and 1988 when it was still published in broadsheet format. <\/p>\n After a brief return to the Financial Times<\/em> he became editor of\u00a0Scottish Business Insider<\/em>\u00a0and managing director of the\u00a0Insider Group<\/em>.<\/p>\n He was one of the team of four directors who sold the\u00a0magazine to the\u00a0Daily Record<\/em>\u00a0in 2001. <\/p>\n In the late 1990s he wrote a regular column for The Sunday Times Scotland<\/em>.<\/p>\n Born in\u00a0Surrey, he was raised in Scotland from the age of three and was educated at\u00a0Dalhousie Preparatory School\u00a0and\u00a0Strathallan School\u00a0in\u00a0Perthshire.<\/p>\n He died in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary on 23 January and leave a widow Jaqueline (Jackie) and sons Mark, Paul, Peter and David.<\/p>\n \t <\/div>\n
