Sussan Ley\u2019s shadow immigration minister has \u201cserious concerns\u201d over a proposal to ban migrants from specific regions of 13 countries \u2013 including from Gaza, Afghanistan and Somalia \u2013 outlined in a leaked hardline Liberal immigration plan.<\/p>\n
Guardian Australia understands the banned regions, outlined in the policy designed before Ley was ousted as Liberal party leader<\/a> on Friday, were based on areas where listed terrorist organisations have territorial control.<\/p>\n The 37 specific regions under the proposed ban are in Afghanistan, Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Lebanon, Libya, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Palestine, the Philippines, Somalia and Yemen.<\/p>\n Guardian Australia has been told the proposed ban was not taken to shadow cabinet before the leadership change, and the new opposition leader, Angus Taylor<\/a>, had not seen the plan.<\/p>\n In response to the leaks, Scarr \u2013 who was shadow immigration minister until Friday \u2013 said he has serious concerns over any ban.<\/p>\n \u201cI never proposed any such policy. I never agreed to any such policy. I have a range of serious concerns with respect to any such policy,\u201d Scarr said.<\/p>\n It\u2019s understood Scarr had also voiced concerns internally when the proposed ban was first raised.<\/p>\n The Liberals\u2019 proposal would also seek to remove as many as 100,000 asylum seekers and international students from Australia more quickly. Visa holders could have their rights to appeal immigration decisions restricted, and be blocked from consideration to move on to other visas.<\/p>\n
