Chartered accountants in Scotland have lost confidence in the economy and called for tax cuts to make Scotland\u00a0a\u00a0more attractive\u00a0place to do business.<\/p>\n
A survey by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) found that\u00a0just 6%\u00a0of members were confident in the\u00a0state\u00a0of the economy.\u00a0In\u00a0contrast, more than three-quarters (78%) said they do not\u00a0feel confident.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Nearly two-thirds\u00a0(63%) of respondents said there was a need for\u00a0a\u00a0long-term economic and tax strategy.<\/p>\n
\u201cScotland needs a lower tax environment, with incentives for businesses to locate here, to attract entrepreneurs and increase productivity,\u201d\u00a0said one ICAS member. \u201cThere also\u00a0has to\u00a0be much more emphasis on education and training to build an attractive employee base.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Gail Boag, ICAS CEO,\u00a0said:\u00a0\u201cOur findings\u00a0reveal deepening\u00a0concern among\u00a0chartered accountants about the lack of a clear, long-term economic strategy for Scotland.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cICAS members\u00a0work\u00a0at the heart of\u00a0the\u00a0business\u00a0community\u00a0as trusted advisers, so are witnessing first-hand\u00a0how\u00a0policy uncertainty and\u00a0short-term changes\u00a0are\u00a0eroding\u00a0confidence and transparency in the economy.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWith\u00a0the Scottish\u00a0elections\u00a0approaching, the\u00a0next Government\u00a0must\u00a0take\u00a0decisive action beyond incremental tax tinkering and\u00a0set out a\u00a0more coherent economic vision. One that delivers tax stability, supports key growth sectors,\u00a0and invests in skills to strengthen Scotland\u2019s\u00a0long-term\u00a0competitiveness.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
