The rebel Liberal National party<\/a> Queensland MP Nigel Dalton, who earlier this week defied the state\u2019s premier, David Crisafulli, over the abortion law debate, has encouraged others \u201cto put on the full armour of God\u201d and speak out on the issue.<\/p>\n In an interview posted on YouTube, Dalton told the anti-abortion activist Joanna Howe<\/a> his \u201chistory with anti-abortion has been probably 30-odd years in the making\u201d.<\/p>\n Howe asked the Mackay MP if he had any advice for other members of his party who felt under pressure to stay silent on the issue.<\/p>\n \u201cThe battle is not against people. It\u2019s against principalities. It\u2019s against demons. And you have to put on the full armour of God. You have to be sure in your faith, and the Lord will look after you,\u201d Dalton said.<\/p>\n The LNP was dogged by questions over its position on abortion<\/a> through the 2024 election campaign, with the party saying that there would \u201cnot be any changes\u201d to legislation because \u201cit\u2019s not part of our plan\u201d.<\/p>\n Dalton, a first term MP, said he regretted his vote alongside all other LNP MPs to place a gag on any debate on the issue<\/a> in 2024, which he put down to \u201cnaivety\u201d and lack of understanding of the motion.<\/p>\n Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/sub><\/a><\/p>\n He crossed the floor on Tuesday to vote on a motion by Robbie Katter that would have allowed the crossbench to ask parliament to overturn the order.<\/p>\n Dalton said he \u201cthought this is my time to redeem myself in the eyes of the public, say sorry, but also in the eyes of God\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s who I serve. I don\u2019t serve anybody else. I obviously understand the leadership of the LNP is going to be, it\u2019s going to be a difficult time for them to manage this.\u201d<\/p>\n Dalton is the first government member to cross the floor in several terms.<\/p>\n In a brief press conference on Tuesday, he said the decision was \u201cdeeply personal\u201d but refused to elaborate.<\/p>\n Crisafulli downplayed the vote on Tuesday.<\/p>\n \u201cWe took a position to the election, and that position remains. You know my position. There was a lot of talk about this for the election, and I said to you, there wouldn\u2019t be change. And I\u2019d like to think that today reaffirms that overwhelmingly,\u201d he said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n Dalton told Howe on Tuesday: \u201cMy regret is that I didn\u2019t stand up earlier, OK, and I asked God for forgiveness for that; I should have stood up in the campaign.<\/p>\n \u201cI stood in press conferences in Mackay, alongside other members who are now in the government, and we said there would be no change, no change to the abortion laws. There probably won\u2019t be any changes. But I didn\u2019t believe that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Several LNP MPs were quoted<\/a> during the election campaign promising changes to the state\u2019s abortion laws. Numerous members of the Crisafulli government voted against the bill legalising it<\/a> in 2018, and others have professed strong views against abortion<\/a>.<\/p>\n In Thursday\u2019s question time Labor levelled an attack on LNP assistant minister Amanda Stoker, tabling a document with claims about the Oodgeroo MP.<\/p>\n In the video, the CEO of anti-abortion group Cherish Life, Matt Cliff, claims Stoker told him \u201cmaybe we can do it next term\u201d, referring to changing Queensland\u2019s abortion laws.<\/p>\n In a statement Stoker said: \u201cI did not commit to any position on behalf of the government and there will be no change to the laws\u201d.<\/p>\n
