{"id":21060,"date":"2026-02-12T05:46:27","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T05:46:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=21060"},"modified":"2026-02-12T05:46:27","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T05:46:27","slug":"support-builds-for-angus-taylor-after-launching-liberal-party-leadership-challenge-against-sussan-ley-liberal-party","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=21060","title":{"rendered":"Support builds for Angus Taylor after launching Liberal party leadership challenge against Sussan Ley | Liberal party"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Sussan Ley\u2019s embattled leadership has suffered a major blow, with key backer and Queensland senator James McGrath resigning from the frontbench in order to back <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/angus-taylor\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Angus Taylor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Taylor\u2019s supporters are growing increasingly confident the former shadow defence minister will win Friday\u2019s Liberal leadership ballot, set down for 9am at Parliament House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">McGrath\u2019s move to quit was quickly followed by opposition Senate leader and foreign affairs spokesperson, Michaelia Cash, as she moved her support to Taylor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">After resigning from shadow cabinet on Wednesday night, Taylor confirmed plans to challenge Ley in a social media video posted on Thursday morning, amid a wave of resignations from the shadow frontbench.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe Labor government has failed and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/liberal-party\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Liberal party<\/a> has lost its way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI\u2019m running to be the leader of the Liberal party because I believe that Australia is worth fighting for. I believe we need strong and decisive leadership that gives Australians clarity, courage and confidence in providing a vision for the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI\u2019m committing myself to the cause of restoring our party, so that it can be the party that Australians expect and deserve, because we\u2019re running out of time and Australia is worth fighting for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"><sub class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/sub><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The video was posted after two of Taylor\u2019s allies \u2013 Jess Collins and Phil Thompson \u2013 handed a letter to Ley on Thursday morning requesting a motion to spill the leadership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Senior conservatives Jonno Duniam and James Paterson resigned at about 10am, joining fellow frontbenchers Matt O\u2019Sullivan and Claire Chandler, in a coordinated move designed to build pressure on Ley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">McGrath, a former party strategist and powerbroker, quit about 3pm. His vote could be decisive in the ballot, expected to be settled with a narrow margin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe must take the fight to Labor and I have made this decision with that at the forefront,\u201d McGrath said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhether on net zero, immigration, violent Islamic extremism, cost of living or keeping Australians safe, Labor and Anthony Albanese have failed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Thompson cited poor polling for his decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe\u2019ve seen that the people are quite upset. Well, the way that we act is by change, and nine months is enough time to be able to turn that around, and that hasn\u2019t happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Under party conventions, two or more Liberal MPs can request a special party room meeting to vote on a leadership spill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">If a majority of MPs support the spill motion, a secret ballot then determines the leader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Ley has not spoken publicly about the challenge, but attended question time and spoke on the government\u2019s Closing the Gap agenda in parliament. I think that the majority of the party room believes that Sussan hasn\u2019t been given a fair go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Jockeying is also under way for the Liberal deputy leadership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Incumbent Ted O\u2019Brien faces an uphill challenge if Ley is rolled, with Victorian Jane Hume emerging as a possible frontrunner for the job under Taylor.
