{"id":21006,"date":"2026-02-12T01:42:24","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T01:42:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=21006"},"modified":"2026-02-12T01:42:24","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T01:42:24","slug":"tarique-rahman-promises-era-of-clean-politics-as-bangladesh-holds-first-election-since-fall-of-hasina-bangladesh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=21006","title":{"rendered":"Tarique Rahman promises era of clean politics as Bangladesh holds first election since fall of Hasina | Bangladesh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Tarique Rahman, who after 17 years in exile is the main contender to be the next prime minister of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/bangladesh\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Bangladesh<\/a>, has pledged to end entrenched corruption and put the country on a \u201cnew path\u201d as voting began in the first free and fair elections in almost two decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Speaking to the Guardian before polls opened on Thursday morning, Rahman promised a new era of clean politics, including a \u201ctop down, no tolerance\u201d approach to graft, if his Bangladesh Nationalist party (BNP) was brought to power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">According to polls, the BNP are likely to win a sizeable majority over their rival, the Islamist party Jamaat e-Islami, returning the party to power after 20 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Softly spoken and understated, 60-year-old Rahman acknowledged the elections were taking place at a pivotal but \u201cchallenging\u201d moment for Bangladesh, which has long ranked among the world\u2019s most corrupt countries and where democracy has faced a sustained attack for more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe saw in the last regime that corruption was encouraged,\u201d said Rahman. \u201cOur economy was left destroyed. However, the country has remained in turmoil, amid a decline in law and order and frustrations over economic stagnation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Analysts emphasised that a fair and violence-free election would be a vital step forward for the country. There are 127 million registered voters and in a bid to keep security tight, more than 900,000 police, army and security personnel have been deployed on polling day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis is the first credible election the country\u2019s held in 17 years so it\u2019s incredibly significant,\u201d said Thomas Kean, Crisis Group\u2019s senior consultant on Bangladesh. \u201cPeople are eager to have the chance to vote after so long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In Dhaka, young voters spoke of their thrill at experiencing democracy first hand. \u201cI am excited, this is the first time I am freely taking part in an election,\u201d said Yasmin Sorupa, 30, who said she intended to vote BNP. \u201cIn the past, I could never cast my vote because when I went to the polling station, somebody had already cast it.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"3b1373bc-61fe-420e-be15-b40a407a8d51\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-fd61eq\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">BNP supporters walk in support of Tarique Rahman during a campaign rally. <\/span> Photograph: Sajjad Hussain\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Rahman returned to Bangladesh to fight the elections on Christmas day, ending more than 17 years spent as a political fugitive. He took over leadership of the BNP from his mother, former prime minister Khaleda Zia, a giant of Bangladeshi politics and longtime political nemesis of Hasina. She <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/dec\/30\/khaleda-zia-first-female-bangladesh-prime-minister-dies-aged-80\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">died just five days after Rahman\u2019s return home<\/a> in December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cPhysically, I may have been out of the country but for all those years I was always connected to my people in Bangladesh,\u201d he said. \u201cAs soon as the opportunity came to serve my people, I came back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Rahman\u2019s time in self-imposed exile in London, living in the suburb of Kingston with his wife and daughter, is said by associates to have mellowed him. His experiences of day-to-day British life also left an imprint, from his push for more tolerance in Bangladeshi politics to his determination to introduce weekly rubbish bin collections in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Many in Bangladesh say they cannot forget the corruption that flourished during the last BNP regime between 2001 and 2006, under his mother. Rahman did not dispute that \u201cmistakes\u201d had been made by his party in the past. \u201cI will not deny that. In 2008, he was released to seek medical treatment in London, after being so badly tortured in jail that he was taken to the plane in a wheelchair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">During Hasina\u2019s subsequent 15-year rule, he was convicted of a slew of terror and corruption charges, which he alleges were politically motivated to keep him out of Bangladesh. In 2024, after Hasina\u2019s fall, the courts overturned his convictions, finally freeing him to return home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt\u2019s been more than 18 years and they\u2019ve failed to prove anything,\u201d said Rahman. \u201cDon\u2019t you think that\u2019s good enough, long enough to prove that I did nothing wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Yet not all in Bangladesh have cheered Rahman\u2019s return. Both his parents were Bangladeshi prime ministers and to many, he is just the next generation of dynastic politicians, continuing the grip that two families have had over Bangladesh since independence in 1971 and which many had hoped the July uprising would bring to an end.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"d224dd08-6484-4b89-8784-88fd94b20a8a\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-fd61eq\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">Jamaat-e-Islami leader Shafiqur Rahman, centre, and other leaders during the last day of an election rally. <\/span> Photograph: Anupam Nath\/AP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Even if the BNP win a sizeable majority in the election, analysts emphasised that the resurgence of the Islamist Jamaat e-Islami party and their Islamist alliance \u2013 parties that were banned under Hasina \u2013 could present major challenges for the BNP and Bangladesh\u2019s secularism in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Jamaat e-Islami, alongside allies that follow even more hardline Islamist politics, all believe in the introduction of sharia law and are likely to gain the largest vote share in their history and form a formidable opposition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Jamaat e-Islami\u2019s leader has already been accused of regressive policies and controversial views on women\u2019s rights in the home and workplace. Human rights groups have also raised an alarm over a recent surge in moral policing of women, with incidents such as girls being prevented from playing football and enforcement of modest dress and headscarves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Rahman acknowledged there were \u201csome extremist people who are trying to do these things\u201d but he said it didn\u2019t have \u201cany relation with Islam or religion\u201d.
