{"id":20612,"date":"2026-02-10T20:22:15","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T20:22:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=20612"},"modified":"2026-02-10T20:22:15","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T20:22:15","slug":"heres-how-rivian-changed-the-rear-door-manual-release-on-the-r2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=20612","title":{"rendered":"Here&#8217;s how Rivian changed the rear door manual release on the R2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s been a lot of pushback on <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/02\/02\/china-is-leading-the-fight-against-hidden-car-door-handles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">electronic door handles<\/a> lately, as multiple carmakers \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/features\/2025-tesla-dangerous-doors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">especially Tesla<\/a> \u2014 have been accused of making manual door releases too hard to find and access during an emergency. Rivian is one of the companies that reportedly decided to change this on its upcoming R2 SUV, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EfReqcUJfBU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">spate<\/a> of first-look videos released Tuesday finally give us a look at what the company has changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First off, the front doors open from the inside in the <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.ctfassets.net\/2md5qhoeajym\/58YFddVW81sybQaJvra4HF\/5a3dae18149f7c261ff36f8f3c38cafa\/r1t-my25-26-og-en-us-20250722.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">same way as in the existing R1 vehicles<\/a>. There is an electronic button that opens the door, and there\u2019s a manual door-release latch tucked into the front part of the interior handle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rear doors also have an electronic button, as well as a change to the rear manual release. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On R1 vehicles, passengers have to first pull a panel off the door to access a \u201crelease cord\u201d that operates the manual latch. On the new R2 SUV, Rivian moved this release cord to that same front-of-the-handle position as the front seat manual releases \u2014 though it\u2019s still tucked behind a piece of plastic that must be popped out, making it slightly harder to access than the front door manual releases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The R2 SUV isn\u2019t set to go into production for another few months, so the company has not put out proper instructions on how to access this release. But when they do, it\u2019s typically during a major crash. That means every moment can mean the difference between life and death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rivian is not alone in reworking how hard it is to access the manual releases. The most high-profile example is Tesla. Bloomberg News found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2025-12-22\/tesla-door-safety-tied-to-at-least-15-auto-accident-deaths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">at least 15 deaths in crashes<\/a> where there is evidence that occupants (or rescuers) were unable to open the doors. The company has said it will <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/09\/17\/tesla-is-redesigning-its-door-handles-following-safety-probe-bloomberg-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">change how it designs its handles<\/a> in order to address the problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And electronic door latches can present other issues.
