{"id":19826,"date":"2026-02-08T05:07:47","date_gmt":"2026-02-08T05:07:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=19826"},"modified":"2026-02-08T05:07:47","modified_gmt":"2026-02-08T05:07:47","slug":"coalition-reunites-after-sussan-ley-brokers-deal-with-david-littleproud-to-end-second-split-coalition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=19826","title":{"rendered":"Coalition reunites after Sussan Ley brokers deal with David Littleproud to end second split | Coalition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Coalition has reunited after Sussan Ley brokered a deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/david-littleproud\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">David Littleproud<\/a> to bring the Liberals and Nationals back together for the second time since the May 2025 election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Littleproud guaranteed there would be no further splits while he and Ley were in charge, after both leaders made significant concessions to end a messy and damaging period for the struggling conservative parties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Liberal and Nationals leaders announced the peace deal at a joint press conference in Canberra on Sunday afternoon, less than three weeks after Littleproud blew up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/coalition\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Coalition<\/a> and declared the political alliance \u201cuntenable\u201d under Ley in a rift over Labor\u2019s hate speech laws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cNow I acknowledge that this has been a difficult time,\u201d Ley told reporters in parliament house.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt\u2019s been a difficult time for millions of our Coalition supporters and many other Australians who rely on our two great parties to provide scrutiny and national leadership, but the Coalition is back together and looking to the future, not the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Ley had given the Nationals until this Monday to reunite with the Liberals before she proceeded with a permanent Liberal-only frontbench that would have cemented the breakup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"><sub class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/sub><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Under the peace deal finalised on Saturday, all of the former Nationals frontbenchers will be suspended from the shadow ministry until March before resuming in their old portfolios.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Littleproud and the Nationals\u2019 deputy leader, Kevin Hogan, will attend shadow cabinet and other senior leadership meetings during the period, even though neither would technically hold frontbench positions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The deal represents a compromise from both leaders, whose standing among their colleagues has been damaged in the messy saga.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Ley last week offered to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/feb\/03\/nationals-coalition-backbench\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">reunite with the Nationals<\/a> but only if the three Nationals senators who crossed the floor on Labor\u2019s hate speech laws \u2013 Bridget McKenzie, Susan McDonald and Ross Cadell \u2013 served a six-month suspension on the backbench.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But Littleproud, who initially said the Coalition was \u201cuntenable\u201d under Ley, was adamant the Nationals had done nothing wrong and therefore shouldn\u2019t be punished.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"88ba1d3a-afa8-4dc9-9795-7796c49e5ac9\" data-spacefinder-role=\"richLink\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-47fhrn\"><gu-island name=\"RichLinkComponent\" priority=\"feature\" deferuntil=\"idle\" props=\"{&quot;richLinkIndex&quot;:12,&quot;element&quot;:{&quot;_type&quot;:&quot;model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement&quot;,&quot;prefix&quot;:&quot;Related: &quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Coalition squabbling and Labor tinkering leave us in a dangerous vacuum. I said then that I was up for the job \u2013 I am up for the job now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In his clearest public statement about his intentions, Taylor said on Friday that he still harboured leadership ambitions but insisted there was \u201cno plan\u201d for a spill next week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI\u2019m not going to say to you and your listeners that I don\u2019t have and haven\u2019t had leadership ambitions.
