Parts of US national security strategy ‘unacceptable’ from European perspective, Germany’s Merz says<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n
German chancellor Friedrich Merz also responded to the latest statements from the US, inlcuding its new national security strategy.<\/strong><\/p>\n Speaking on a visit to the state of Rhineland-Palatinate<\/strong>, he said that he wasn\u2019t surprised by the strategy \u201cin substance,\u201d linking it to vice-president JD Vance\u2019s Munich speech earlier this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cSome of it is understandable, some of it is comprehensible, some of it is unacceptable to us from a European perspective<\/strong>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Merz added that there was \u201cno need for the Americans to want to save democracy in Europe.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n But he said the document confirmed his view that the EU needed to \u201cbecome much more independent from the US in terms of security policy.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n Merz also suggested that Trump could visit Germany in 2026<\/strong>, with the invitation accepted \u201cwith great enthusiasm,\u201d but no date has been set yet.<\/p>\n
