The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/electoral-commission\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Electoral Commission<\/a> said the omission was a matter for the police, stressing that failing \u201cto include an imprint in candidate election material is an offence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Dozens of voters in the Gorton and Denton constituency reported receiving letters from a pensioner written in a handwriting-style font on Friday. And I said, \u2018Yeah\u2019, and I left the rest to them,\u201d she said, when asked if she had written the letter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Asked if she was aware that the letter did not have the legally necessary imprint saying it was backed by the party, she said no one had talked to her about that issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A Reform spokesperson said the campaign had commissioned the letter which was given to its print contractor \u201cwith the full and correct legal imprint, fully compliant with election law\u201d but \u201can error occurred during the printing process\u201d. Subsequently the legal imprint was \u201cinadvertently removed at the point of printing\u201d without the party\u2019s knowledge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAt no stage did the campaign know about, authorise or intend the distribution of material without a legal imprint,\u201d the spokesperson said. They haven\u2019t.\u201d It added that tax rises \u201chave cost pensioners like me an extra \u00a3160 that we cannot afford\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The author also says they \u201cunderstand why some neighbours have had enough of Keir Starmer and are thinking of voting Green. But I do not believe the Greens have answers to our problems. They have extreme policies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/jan\/28\/labour-attacks-green-party-drugs-policy-gorton-and-denton-byelection\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">legalising drugs<\/a> and letting men use women\u2019s changing rooms. What good would that do people like us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Several copies of the letter were posted on local Facebook and WhatsApp groups, with people saying they received them on Friday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">One voter, who said they were not affiliated to any party, said they had reported the matter to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/manchester\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Manchester<\/a> city council\u2019s elections office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/jan\/31\/labour-chooses-angeliki-stogia-for-gorton-and-denton-byelection\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">byelection<\/a> is expected to be tightly fought between Labour, the Greens and Reform, with all three claiming they are on course to win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Friday, a Green party spokesperson accused Reform of \u201cplaying dirty\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWith Reform raking in millions from crypto billionaires and fossil fuel giants, you\u2019d think they\u2019d be able to afford to follow the law,\u201d they said. \u201cBut instead they\u2019re playing dirty \u2013 because they know te Greens are coming for them in Gorton and Denton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe only way to stop Reform\u2019s politics of division and hate is to vote for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/jan\/30\/greens-select-former-mayoral-candidate-hannah-spencer-to-run-in-gorton-and-denton-byelection\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Hannah Spencer<\/a> \u2013 to elect a Green MP who will fight to lower bills, protect the NHS and rebuild our public services.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"7fed84f8-053a-41bc-acf2-4d9734b5a464\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-fd61eq\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">Hannah Spencer, the Green party candidate in the Gorton and Denton byelection.<\/span> Photograph: Christopher Thomond\/The Guardian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Labour\u2019s campaign political lead Andrew Western MP said: \u201cCampaigns are responsible for what they put through people\u2019s doors. Blaming a printer doesn\u2019t remove that responsibility or excuse the failure to meet basic legal requirements.
