I have delivered everything that I promised my party when I was first elected as federal leader,\u201d he told reporters in the port city of Durban on Wednesday. \u201cMy term will be remembered for leading the DA into national government and putting South Africa on a new path to prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DA is a member of South Africa\u2019s 10-party ruling coalition that was formed after the African National Congress lost its parliamentary majority in 2024 elections. He has said he favours remaining in the so-called government of national unity, but that the terms of engagement need to be improved.<\/p>\n<p>Steenhuisen, 49, also serves as South Africa\u2019s agriculture minister, one of six DA members in President Cyril Ramaphosa\u2019s cabinet. Hill-Lewis plans to run for a second mayoral term in municipal elections that must be held within the next 12 months and doesn\u2019t plan to join the national executive.<\/p>\n<p>Steenhuisen has faced criticism from within the DA over the ruling coalition\u2019s policy choices, while his handling of a deadly outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease has angered cattle farmers \u2014 a key party constituency.<\/p>\n<div class=\"visible-sm-block visible-xs-block m1010\">\n<div class=\"ad-container-wrapper\">\n<p>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/p>\n<p>CONTINUE READING BELOW<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>He also became embroiled in a public spat with the DA\u2019s finance chief, who later quit the party, and was implicated in misusing a credit card \u2014 although an internal probe cleared him of wrongdoing.
