{"id":18497,"date":"2026-02-03T21:58:46","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T21:58:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=18497"},"modified":"2026-02-03T21:58:46","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T21:58:46","slug":"netflix-co-ceo-grilled-by-us-senators-over-warner-bros-discovery-merger-netflix","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=18497","title":{"rendered":"Netflix co-CEO grilled by US senators over Warner Bros Discovery merger | Netflix"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/netflix\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Netflix<\/a> co-chief executive Ted Sarandos faced tough questioning over whether the streamer is \u201coverwhelmingly woke\u201d or killing competition on Tuesday afternoon during a congressional hearing focused on its pending acquisition of the film and streaming assets of Warner Bros Discovery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The hearing was conducted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/us-senate\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Senate<\/a> subcommittee on antitrust, competition policy, and consumer rights. Bruce Campbell, chief revenue and strategy officer for Warner Bros Discovery, also testified in the packed Senate hearing room.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Both Sarandos and Campbell addressed concerns about how the merger would affect entertainment industry jobs, whether it would raise consumer prices for streaming services, whether it would result in less content for users, and whether it would hurt the movie theater business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to operate the WarnerBros studio largely as it is today,\u201d Sarandos said in response to a question from Democratic senator Adam Schiff about whether the merger would result in layoffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Josh Hawley, a Republican Senator, specifically questioned Sarandos about the content of Netlix programming, using data that Sarandos said was \u201cinaccurate\u201d. Hawley said he and his wife have to review the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/netflix\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Netflix<\/a> content their children want to watch because \u201cI don\u2019t have confidence in what\u2019s on your platform.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"f5f09777-0b13-4d07-bfc5-6765224c83a6\" data-spacefinder-role=\"richLink\" this ideology in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Sarandos said that \u201cNetflix programming has no agenda of any kind,\u201d adding: \u201cWe feature a wide variety of stories and programs to meet a wide variety of tastes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cMy concern is that you don\u2019t share my values or that of many American parents,\u201d Hawley said. \u201cI think we ought to be concerned about what content you\u2019re promoting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Eric Schmitt, a Republican senator from Missouri, pressed Sarandos on donations made by Netflix employees to Democrats and accused him and his company of promoting \u201cDEI and wokeness\u201d. \u201cThe overwhelming majority of your stuff is overwhelmingly woke,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe have no political agenda,\u201d Sarandos responded. \u201cWe have a great deal of programming on Netflix, left, right and center.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">When asked by a Democratic senator about concerns that past media mergers have resulted in job losses, Sarandos acknowledged that \u201cmost media mergers have faired poorly\u201d \u2013 but said \u201cthis media merger will be different than any of the others because we actually need these people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The chair of the subcommittee, Republican senator Mike Lee, began the hearing by saying that the merger raises <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2025\/dec\/08\/trump-netflix-warner-bros-takeover-deal-competition-concerns\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">competition concerns<\/a> because Netflix would no longer be competing with a streaming service it would acquire, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/hbo\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">HBO<\/a> Max.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe merged firm would have both the incentive and the ability to put rivals at a disadvantage,\u201d Lee said in his opening remarks, saying the deal could \u201cfurther entrench Netflix\u2019s dominance\u201d. \u201cAll told, one might say that Netflix seeks to become the online platform to rule them all,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Republican senator Chuck Grassley said \u201cthis proposed merger could affect prices and choices,\u201d saying his constituents \u201cdeserve real competition that keeps prices in check\u201d for subscriptions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In his opening remarks, Sarandos talked about the value of the merger and the need to compete in an extremely competitive marketplace for content.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWith WBD, we\u2019re going to create more economic growth and more value for consumers,\u201d Sarandos said. \u201cWe will give consumers more content for less \u2026 We\u2019re buying a company that has assets we do not, and we will keep investing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/warner-bros\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Warner Bros<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Originally announced in early December, Netflix <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2026\/jan\/20\/netflix-sweetens-warner-bros-bid-all-cash-offer-block-paramount\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">upgraded<\/a> its purchase price in mid-January to make the transaction \u2013 valued at $82.7bn \u2013 all-cash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Paramount Skydance has made several unsuccessful offers for the entirety of Warner Bros Discovery, including its television assets.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"941b6abf-6f60-4042-ba3b-4c48c9bf777b\" data-spacefinder-role=\"richLink\" having Paramount Skydance here is frustrating,\u201d he said, although he thanked Ellison for meeting with him and other senators to discuss his company\u2019s bid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe acquisition of WBD by either Netflix or Paramount or another company would result in consolidation of a sector of our economy that has already seen significant consolidation,\u201d Booker said. \u201cWith either merger, another company will gain more control over what we see, what we hear and what we consume.\u201d (Booker admitted to being a Netflix power-watcher, saying he \u201cwatches Netflix with hours I don\u2019t want to confess in an open hearing\u201d.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Anti-monopoly groups and veterans of the anti-trust space <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/ng-interactive\/2025\/dec\/13\/deal-or-no-deal-the-inside-story-of-the-battle-for-warner-bros\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">have said<\/a> that Netflix\u2019s acquisition of WBD presents competition concerns that will surely be looked at closely by both domestic and international regulators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">While the anti-trust division of the justice department has the most significant role to play in approving the deal, along with the Federal Trade Commission, state attorneys general could also file lawsuits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Booker said on Tuesday that he hopes that antitrust regulators will \u201creview this merger fairly\u201d and without political bias, citing concerns that Donald Trump could seek to interfere inappropriately to press for changes at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/ng-interactive\/2025\/jul\/05\/trump-attack-us-media\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">media
