{"id":18452,"date":"2026-02-03T18:55:39","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T18:55:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=18452"},"modified":"2026-02-03T18:55:39","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T18:55:39","slug":"us-private-investigator-did-unlawful-stuff-for-the-daily-mail-court-hears-associated-newspapers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=18452","title":{"rendered":"US private investigator did \u2018unlawful stuff\u2019 for the Daily Mail, court hears | Associated Newspapers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A US-based private detective bought a large house in California and had $150,000 in savings \u201calmost entirely\u201d from work he did for the publisher of the Daily Mail, the high court has heard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Daniel Portley-Hanks, also known as \u201cDetective Danno\u201d, said he received about $1m for work carried out for the Mail on Sunday, another title published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/associated-newspapers\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Associated Newspapers<\/a> Ltd (ANL).<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Giving evidence, Portley-Hanks said he went bankrupt after the publisher stopped using his services after the 2012 Leveson inquiry into the practices of the press. He said he was \u201cthe database guy\u201d, stating: \u201cAll I needed was a name or a phone number and I could find a target\u2019s contact and other private details, usually within minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In court, Portley-Hanks said he did not believe anything he was doing was illegal \u201cat the time\u201d, but that he now believed he had carried out activities that are unlawful in the UK, including the gathering of personal data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">This was challenged by ANL\u2019s legal team, who pointed to his previous public statements stating he had not broken the law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">ANL denies that its journalists engaged in wrongdoing. It has described all of the allegations of unlawful information gathering as \u201clurid\u201d and \u201cpreposterous\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Portley-Hanks alleged that the publisher tried to conceal its continued use of private investigators by asking him to change his email address, to make it appear that he was a Hollywood reporter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He also alleged that on one occasion he was used as part of a chain to make a payment to a serving police officer for documents relating to Jeffrey Epstein. This is denied by ANL.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">While Portley-Hanks said he thought he carried out some work in relation to John, Hurley and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/prince-harry\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Prince Harry<\/a>, he said he could not remember anything specific.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI recall that I did stuff for the Mail on Sunday and Daily Mail in relation to Prince Harry,\u201d he said in a written submission. \u201cI know that I did unlawful stuff on him, but I cannot recall what exactly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI also did stuff on Elton John. That was basically getting contact information for him and his boyfriend or significant other. I know that I did something involving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/elizabeth-hurley\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Elizabeth Hurley<\/a>, but I cannot recall what it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Portley-Hanks, who said he was in and out of jail when he was younger, was most recently imprisoned in 2017 in relation to his role with a violent gambling group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">ANL\u2019s legal team presented emails showing that a Mail editor had sought confirmation that Portley-Hanks was acting lawfully. It said the \u201cserious allegations, which are denied in their entirety, are unsupported by the available evidence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The publisher said some journalists named in relation to Portley-Hanks had not heard of him until the case. Its legal team also said he was of \u201cdoubtful relevance\u201d to the claimants\u2019 case, given a lack of evidence connecting him to stories about them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">There is uncertainty over whether a key figure in the trial will give evidence.
