{"id":18434,"date":"2026-02-03T17:54:46","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T17:54:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=18434"},"modified":"2026-02-03T17:54:46","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T17:54:46","slug":"supermax-style-units-for-most-dangerous-criminals-to-be-introduced-in-england-and-wales-prisons-and-probation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=18434","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Supermax-style units\u2019 for most dangerous criminals to be introduced in England and Wales | Prisons and probation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The most dangerous extremist prisoners in England and Wales will be held in \u201csupermax-style units\u201d similar to those used in US jails, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/david-lammy\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">David Lammy<\/a> has told MPs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The deputy prime minister also said he would consider drawing up legislation to stop prisoners from using human rights laws to challenge tougher conditions in jail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Jonathan Hall KC, the independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, was commissioned to carry out a review on separation units in May. His report was published on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Lammy said he would accept Hall\u2019s 13 recommendations in full.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">They include:<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><span data-dcr-style=\"bullet\"\/> The creation of a new tiered separation centre system, with the most dangerous extremists facing stricter conditions. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2025\/dec\/24\/manchester-arena-plotter-alleged-prison-attack-sparks-call-for-us-style-rewards-system\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">As reported in the Guardian<\/a> last month, Hall recommended that privileges could be earned or taken away depending on closely monitored standards of behaviour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><span data-dcr-style=\"bullet\"\/> Consideration of whether new legislation is required to protect decisions taken by experienced staff in separation centres from human rights legislation. Hall wrote that prisoners have been able to use article 8 of the European convention on human rights (ECHR) to challenge conditions in separation centres. \u201cIn my view, the government should take steps to limit the application of article 8,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><span data-dcr-style=\"bullet\"\/> An expert-led review of training for staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><span data-dcr-style=\"bullet\"\/> Further improving intelligence collection practices to reduce unnecessary bureaucracy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Lammy said separation centres, special units inside prisons to house Islamist extremists, would be transformed with a new tiered system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Prisons that currently have the centres are HMP Full Sutton near York, HMP Frankland in County Durham, and HMP Woodhill in Milton Keynes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Lammy said: \u201cMr Hall identifies a clear need to transform the way that separation centres are governed and operated.
