The German soccer federation has ruled out a boycott of the\u00a0World Cup\u00a0despite calls from within to send a message to U.S. President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWe believe in the unifying power of sport and the global impact that a FIFA World Cup can have, the federation said in a statement issued late Friday. \u201cOur goal is to strengthen this positive force \u2014 not to prevent it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The federation, known as the DFB, said its executive committee met and discussed the option of a boycott of the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, a consideration first\u00a0proposed last week by DFB vice president Oke G\u00f6ttlich.<\/p>\n

G\u00f6ttlich, who is also the president of Bundesliga club St. Pauli, referred to Trump\u2019s recent actions and statements and said it was time to \u201cseriously consider\u201d a boycott.<\/p>\n

In what appears to be a public rebuke to G\u00f6ttlich, however, the DFB said \u201cdebates on sports policy should be conducted internally and not in public.\u201d<\/p>\n

The DFB said a boycott \u201cis not currently under consideration. The DFB is in contact with representatives from politics, security, business, and sports in preparation for the tournament\u201d from June 11-July 19.<\/p>\n

Trump has sowed discord in Europe with his\u00a0takeover bid for Greenland\u00a0and threats to impose tariffs on European countries that opposed it, while U.S. actions in Venezuela and at home in dealing with\u00a0protests in American cities\u00a0have also raised alarm.<\/p>\n

Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter last week\u00a0advised fans to stay away\u00a0from the tournament.<\/p>\n

When president, however, Blatter opposed calls to boycott the 2018 World Cup in Russia over concerns about Ukraine.<\/p>\n

\u201cFootball can not be boycotted in any country,\u201d he said at the time.<\/p>\n

Ahead of this summer\u2019s tournament, fans have concerns about\u00a0high ticket prices, while travel bans imposed by the Trump administration could also\u00a0prohibit supporters\u00a0from some competing nations from attending.<\/p>\n

Germany\u2019s team, at least, will be there.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to compete fairly against the other qualified teams next summer,\u201d the DFB said. \u201cAnd we want fans worldwide to celebrate a peaceful festival of football in the stadiums and at fan zones \u2014 just as we experienced at the 2024 European Championship in our own country.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
