{"id":17751,"date":"2026-02-01T13:01:35","date_gmt":"2026-02-01T13:01:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=17751"},"modified":"2026-02-01T13:01:35","modified_gmt":"2026-02-01T13:01:35","slug":"anglican-clergy-in-london-to-be-asked-to-promote-antiracism-in-sermons-anglicanism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=17751","title":{"rendered":"Anglican clergy in London to be asked to promote antiracism in sermons | Anglicanism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Church of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/england\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">England<\/a> clergy will be encouraged to promote antiracism in sermons as senior figures unlock thousands of pounds in funding to promote diversity initiatives in London.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Church Commissioners, the body that manages C of E assets, is funding the Diocese of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/london\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">London<\/a>, which covers more than 400 parishes and 18 boroughs north of the River Thames, to boost inclusion work as part of the three-year Racial Justice Priority (RJP) project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">RJP is separate from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/jan\/10\/church-of-england-100m-fund-past-wrongs-slave-trade-links\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">\u00a3100m that the C of E has vowed to put aside for Project Spire<\/a>, a commitment to create a \u201cfund for healing, repair and justice\u201d to address its historic links to the enslavement of African peoples.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But the \u00a3730,000 funding for RJP represents a significant statement of intent from the church at a time when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/articles\/2026\/23-january\/news\/uk\/archbishop-elect-defends-project-spire-against-criticism-from-parliamentarians\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">conservative figures have claimed Project Spire diverts from \u201ccore obligations\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Right Rev Dr Anderson Jeremiah, the Bishop of Edmonton and the Diocese of London\u2019s lead bishop on racial justice, said diverse congregations reflected the Anglican presence in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean as a colonial legacy, and the church had to create a \u201csense of belonging for all\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said of RJP: \u201cWe want racial justice to inform our missional, theological and church practices \u2013 treating each other as created in the image of God is central to our wider Christian faith.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhether it\u2019s Bible studies, baptismal preparations, confirmation preparations or sermons, what we would like to actively promote is racial justice as one of the ways of engaging with the challenges of the church, through resources that can be used in these spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">RJP funding will be used to support educational initiatives, in churches and C of E schools, about church buildings\u2019 links to transatlantic slavery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Churches will also be funded to support refugees and asylum seekers, and be expected to promote diversity in leadership, while unconscious bias training for parochial parish councils will be \u201ctheologically informed\u201d, Lisa Adjei, the head of RJP for the diocese, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Insiders say RJP is designed to fund community cohesion work while \u201calways respecting parishes\u2019 autonomy\u201d. What we want to do is allow people to see that faith and racial justice live side by side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Last week, the new archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofengland.org\/media\/news-and-press-releases\/bishop-sarah-mullally-archbishop-canterbury-elect-responds-parliamentarians-letter-regarding-church\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">defended Project Spire<\/a> as being \u201crooted in the Christian call to repentance, reconciliation and, above all, hope\u201d, after Conservative party critics claimed the fund would divert cash away from local parishes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Mullally said the church was inspired by the example of anti-slavery campaigners, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2021\/sep\/25\/david-olusoga-black-history-month-olaudah-equiano-interview\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Olaudah Equiano<\/a>, adding: \u201cProject Spire does not diminish the church\u2019s support of or investment in parish ministry or clergy \u2026 Church Commissioners\u2019 support for dioceses and parishes continues to increase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Jeremiah said it was hoped RJP would be a catalyst for other funding bids for racial justice work, adding: \u201cOur faith in Jesus Christ compels us to work towards equity and fairness for all. It\u2019s about how we counter the far-right narrative and create a sense of belonging for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Adjei added: \u201cIf we were to set our focus on potential pushback and dissatisfaction we probably wouldn\u2019t start, but, because we\u2019re compelled by the love of God, even in the face of resistance, we press on.
