The Labour party said the peer died on Friday night \u201cpeacefully and at home\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The former prime minister Tony Blair paid tribute to David Triesman as a \u201cvital part of the New Labour movement\u201d. Labour\u2019s leader in the House of Lords, Angela Smith, described him as \u201crespected and loved by his colleagues for his courtesy, kindness, wisdom, loyalty and generosity of spirit\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Triesman was the general secretary of the Association of University Teachers trade union and the general secretary of the Labour party before he joined Blair\u2019s government in the House of Lords in 2004.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He served as a Foreign Office minister and then later as undersecretary of state for innovation, universities and skills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Triesman was later Labour\u2019s shadow minister for foreign affairs and also sat on several prominent select committees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Labour\u2019s statement said: \u201cHe pursued a very active role in the House of Lords from 2004 until his death. And served as a lord in waiting to Queen Elizabeth II from 2004 to 2022.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The party added: \u201cA passionate Spurs fan, Lord Triesman became the first patron of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/tottenham-hotspur\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Tottenham Hotspur<\/a> Foundation and the first independent chair of the FA (Football Association) from which platform he advocated intensely against racism in football and for the increased centrality of the women\u2019s football.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHe later played an important role in the exposing of corruption within Fifa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In 2010, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2010\/may\/16\/lord-triesman-quits-bribery-claims\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">resigned as FA chair<\/a> after being secretly recorded making bribery allegations about rival countries\u2019 attempts to host the men\u2019s World Cup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Blair, prime minister from 1997 until 2007, said in a statement: \u201cDavid was a vital part of the New Labour movement and became in time a great friend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cPassionate about the cause, whether the Labour party or football, he was deeply committed to making change to improve people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cUnwavering in his loyalty and dedication, he was someone both liked and admired by those who had the privilege of working with him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHe was a gentle, genuine, good guy who put others before himself naturally and without hesitation.
