{"id":17025,"date":"2026-01-29T22:32:34","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T22:32:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=17025"},"modified":"2026-01-29T22:32:34","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T22:32:34","slug":"nersa-approves-interim-tariff-discount-for-glencore-merafe-and-samancor-smelters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=17025","title":{"rendered":"Nersa approves interim tariff discount for Glencore-Merafe and Samancor smelters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"textFreeArticle\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Energy regulator Nersa on 29 January approved an application by Eskom to lower the tariff it charges the Glencore-Merafe and Samancor smelters from 136c\/kWh to 87c\/kWh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The discount will be applicable from 1 January to 31 December this year and will only apply to these two Eskom customers. Nersa will deal with applications from other smelters, which have pleaded the same hardship, when it receives such applications.<\/p>\n<p>Read: Nersa members perplexed by Eskom application for smelter tariffs<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decision by the energy regulator is subject to the approval of a government funding mechanism to fill the gap between the current tariff \u2013 which is already discounted in terms of negotiated pricing agreements (NPAs) \u2013 and the 87c\/kWh.<\/p>\n<p>Nersa previously granted the two companies a\u00a0six-month exemption\u00a0from the NPA obligation to buy a minimum volume of electricity, and an\u00a0application from Eskom to extend this exemption\u00a0was not dealt with.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eskom submitted the application late and it has not been subjected to public consultation.
