{"id":16874,"date":"2026-01-29T12:20:36","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T12:20:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=16874"},"modified":"2026-01-29T12:20:36","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T12:20:36","slug":"ai-capex-growth-set-to-slow-down-this-year-or-next-analysts-warn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=16874","title":{"rendered":"AI &#8216;capex&#8217; growth set to slow down this year or next, analysts warn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>Tech stock futures were up this morning\u2014contracts for the Nasdaq 100 were up 0.22% prior to the opening bell in New York\u2014after a fistful of tech companies said they would increase their capital expenditures on AI, promising a vast wave of cash big enough to effect U.S. GDP growth. S&amp;P 500 futures were up 0.19% this morning, too.<\/p>\n<p>The only bad news? Some analysts have begun to warn that the pace of capex growth will start to slow down this year and next.<\/p>\n<p>Shares in Meta and Tesla rose in overnight trading. Meta was up 7.85% and Tesla rose 3.29%. Microsoft, by contrast, declined 6.53% overnight.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<p>All three stocks were driven by their earnings calls, on which each company promised to keep spending on AI:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Meta said its capital expenditures (capex) could be $135 billion this year, nearly double what it spent last year.<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft said it had spent $72.4 billion in the first half of its fiscal year, and capex in its most recent quarter was greater than the previous one, but growth at its Azure cloud unit was slowing\u2014hence the hit to the stock.<\/li>\n<li>Tesla said it would double capex in 2026 as it shifts away from EV car production toward AI and robots. The company also said it would plow $2 billion into Elon Musk\u2019s xAI company, which makes the Grok chatbot.<\/li>\n<li>In South Korea, Samsung also said it would grow AI capex. \u201cAI-related demand [at Samsung] is likely to continue expanding, and memory capex should rise substantially,\u201d according to Jefferies analysts Masahiro Nakanomyo and Hisako Furusumi\u2019s summary of the call. \u201cCapital outlays in 2026 will focus on \u2026 future business expansion.\u201d Memory chip maker SK Hynix will do the same, they said.<\/li>\n<li>And OpenAI will take $40 billion in new investment from Nvidia, Microsoft, and Amazon as part of a $100 billion fundraising round, according to the Financial Times. Much of that cash will be spent on AI data centers.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Clearly, tech stocks\u2014and those of companies that supply them with real estate, parts, and power for their data centers\u2014are going to be driven by AI capex this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So how big will this incoming wave of cash be?<\/h2>\n<p>Here\u2019s a selection of estimates from various Wall Street analysts:<\/p>\n<p>Goldman Sachs predicts AI capex will hit $539 billion, up 36% from $398 billion in 2025. TSMC sales also suggest Hyperscalers\u2019 capex could grow +49% YoY in 2026E. Our analysts expect higher capex for META, MSFT, &amp; AMZN. It\u2019s an AI arms race.\u201d Ohsung Kwon and his colleague said recently in a research note.<\/p>\n<p>Piper Sandler believes the spending is so massive it will boost U.S. GDP, in part due to knock-on effects for the builders and energy suppliers needed to serve all the data centers being built. \u201cWhile data center construction spending has increased \u2018just\u2019 $18 billion, we estimate it\u2019s triggered roughly $175 billion of incremental spending\u2014equivalent to ~0.6% of GDP,\u201d Nancy Lazar and her team said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s a snapshot of the markets ahead of the opening bell in New York this morning:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>S&amp;P 500<\/strong> futures were up 0.22% this morning.
