{"id":16803,"date":"2026-01-29T07:42:55","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T07:42:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=16803"},"modified":"2026-01-29T07:42:55","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T07:42:55","slug":"households-in-england-and-wales-must-splash-out-more-as-water-bills-to-rise-by-5-4-water-bills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=16803","title":{"rendered":"Households in England and Wales must splash out more as water bills to rise by 5.4% | Water bills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Water bills in England and Wales will rise by an average of \u00a333 per household in April, in the latest above-inflation increase intended to fix leaking pipes and sewage treatment works.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The increase will push the average annual water bill to \u00a3639 in the year from 1 April, up 5.4% on the previous year, according to figures published on Thursday by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.water.org.uk\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Water UK<\/a>, a lobby group for the industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The highest average bill will be as much as \u00a3759 for Southern Water customers in southern England.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Water companies have come under sustained criticism in recent years amid outrage over sewage spilling into Britain\u2019s rivers and seas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The regulator, Ofwat, granted companies permission to charge customers a record <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/money\/2024\/dec\/19\/water-bills-for-households-in-england-and-wales-to-rise\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">\u00a3104bn between 2025 and 2030<\/a> in order to pay for maintenance and upgrades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Annual water bills <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/jan\/30\/water-bills-in-england-and-wales-to-rise-by-123-on-average-this-year\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">surged by \u00a3123 last year<\/a> at the start of the five-year period. The smallest increase to the average bill of the combined water and sewerage companies will be the \u00a33 added by Thames Water, the crisis-hit supplier to London and the Thames Valley, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2024\/dec\/18\/thames-water-green-light-hike-bills-one-third-by-2030-ofwat\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">added most of its five-year increase last year<\/a>. Individual household bills are determined by usage and the size of homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Campaigners have criticised the bill increases. River Action is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/jul\/30\/charity-in-legal-action-against-minister-for-failing-to-act-over-thames-water\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">taking the government to court<\/a> to argue that the hikes were not granted properly. Its chief executive, James Wallace, said claims of record investment meant \u201cthat bill payers, not water companies, are being forced to pick up the tab for decades of failure\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">David Henderson, Water UK\u2019s chief executive, said: \u201cWe understand increasing bills is never welcome, but the money is needed to fund vital upgrades to secure our water supplies, support economic growth and end sewage entering our rivers and seas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhile we urgently need investment in our water and sewerage infrastructure, we know that for many this increase will be difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Water UK said that 2.5m households will pay social tariffs, receiving up to 40% off their bills.
