{"id":16667,"date":"2026-01-28T22:32:29","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T22:32:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=16667"},"modified":"2026-01-28T22:32:29","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T22:32:29","slug":"powerful-winter-storm-kills-dozens-in-us-as-forecasters-warn-of-new-system-tennessee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=16667","title":{"rendered":"Powerful winter storm kills dozens in US as forecasters warn of new system | Tennessee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Dozens of weather-related fatalities have been confirmed since the start of the powerful winter storm that swept across much of the US in recent days, with current estimates being as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/winter-storm-extreme-cold-deaths\/#\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">high as 60<\/a> so far.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/tennessee\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Tennessee<\/a> officials have reported eight deaths as forecasters are now monitoring another potentially significant winter storm that could hit parts of the east coast this weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Tennessee health department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/tema\/news\/2026\/1\/27\/flash-report--5---winter-weather.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">confirmed<\/a> on Tuesday that there were eight weather-related fatalities across the state. Nationwide, dozens of weather-related <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jan\/26\/winter-storm-snow-deaths-power-outages-travel\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">deaths<\/a> have been reported, from Texas and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/tatereeves\/status\/2016226659045933562?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2016226659045933562%7Ctwgr%5E350a3b1cf54687ca354e7ba3cf02445ceba48d4d%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.foxweather.com%2Flive-news%2Flive-updates-millions-digging-out-thousands-without-power-as-next-winter-storm-threat-looms\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Tennessee<\/a> to New England, since Friday. Various communities have grappled with heavy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/snow\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">snow<\/a>, ice and dangerously cold temperatures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">As of Wednesday afternoon, approximately 370,000 customers across the country are without power, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/poweroutage.us\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Poweroutage.us<\/a>, including around 129,000 in Tennessee and roughly 113,000 in Mississippi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In Tennessee, Nashville Electric Service (NES) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NESpower\/status\/2016551601444442305\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">said<\/a> that its crews are continuing to work \u201caround the clock\u201d to restore power to customers impacted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The company said that so far, NES crews have restored power to more than 123,000 customers, but that about 107,000 NES power outages remain and more than 300 broken poles have been reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The number of deaths also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wdsu.com\/article\/louisiana-winter-weather-death-toll-8\/70157579\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">rose to eight<\/a> in Louisiana, the state health department confirmed. The cause of death for five of the victims has been determined to be hypothermia. An elderly person in DeSoto Parish died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Also in DeSoto Parish, a 79-year-old woman died after her oxygen concentrator failed as a result of no power. And a Texas man died while driving on icy roads in Mansfield.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Kentucky governor Andy Beshear said on Wednesday that there had been 10 deaths in the state, all of which have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbsi23.com\/news\/gov-beshear-announces-10-confirmed-storm-related-deaths-in-kentucky\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">confirmed<\/a> to be a result of the harsh conditions brought on by the winter storms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe are still experiencing dangerously cold temperatures and windchills, which will continue through the week. Windchills will be negative to single digits for most of the state until Tuesday,\u201d Beshear said, adding: \u201cWe also need Kentuckians to make sure they\u2019re bringing their pets inside; this weather is just as dangerous for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Additionally, at least seven people are confirmed dead in Mississippi following the major winter storm system. In New York, 10 people were found dead outdoors in the freezing temperatures, with mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/zohran-mamdani\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Zohran Mamdani<\/a> confirming that <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/among-10-who-died-outside-in-nyc-cold-a-history-of-homelessness-drug-use-health-issues\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">exposure<\/a> to the severe cold played a role in seven of the 10 deaths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Forecasters are also tracking another winter system. The National Weather Service\u2019s weather prediction center <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWSWPC\/status\/2016447406871572926\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">said <\/a>on Wednesday that a \u201cwinter storm\u201d is \u201clikely this weekend\u201d in some areas, including North and South Carolina, and Virginia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cConfidence is increasing for impactful heavy snow across much of the Carolinas and parts of southern Virginia, beginning as early as Friday night and lasting through the weekend,\u201d the agency said. \u201cConfidence in impacts associated with snowfall remains lower to the north along the East Coast and into New England at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The strong storm system is \u201clikely to produce gusty winds\u201d the agency said, warning that \u201cwhere these winds overlap with snowfall, reduced visibility is likely and could make for difficult travel conditions at times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Weather officials also warned that \u201cseveral factors for this potential winter storm remain uncertain and forecast changes are anticipated as the system draws closer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/discussions\/hpcdiscussions.php?disc=pmdspd\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">update<\/a>, the National Weather Service said: \u201cWhile there is still uncertainty regarding the track\u201d of the winter system, \u201csnowfall is forecast to begin in parts of the Mid-South\/Southern Mid-Atlantic on Friday morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cSnowfall in this region is expected to then persist through at least the weekend, with the most immediate impacts felt in the coastal regions of the Carolinas and Virginia,\u201d they said. \u201cFurther south in Florida and Georgia, rain is expected on Friday as a result of this system, but is expected to be short-lived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The storm this weekend could intensify into a \u201cbomb cyclone\u201d with the potential for significant snow, strong winds and some coastal flooding from the Carolinas to New England, the <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.com\/storms\/winter\/news\/2026-01-27-east-coast-storm-noreaster-bomb-cyclone-snow-wind-forecast\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Weather Channel<\/a> cautioned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Wednesday afternoon, the National Weather Service in Newport\/Morehead City <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWSMoreheadCity\/status\/2016603606007374039\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">said<\/a> that \u201ctrends have been increasing for SIGNIFICANT amounts of snow\u201d and said it is \u201cexpected to be a mostly snow event\u201d and that \u201clocalized blizzard conditions\u201d are \u201cpossible\u201d along the coast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">And the agency\u2019s office in Morristown, Tennessee, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWSMorristown\/status\/2016575728356073579\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">said<\/a> that snowfall is becoming \u201cincreasingly likely for this weekend across southwest Virginia, northeast Tennessee, and far east Tennessee mountains\u201d with \u201cextreme cold conditions\u201d expected \u201carea-wide\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Farther north, the National Weather Service in Baltimore and Washington DC <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWS_BaltWash\/status\/2016518663214403809\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">said<\/a> on Wednesday morning that it was monitoring a \u201cchance for light snow\u201d in some parts of the region later on Wednesday afternoon and evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In New York City, where a cold weather advisory remains in effect, bitterly cold temperatures are <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWSNewYorkNY\/status\/2016111888807932049\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">expected<\/a> to persist throughout the week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe snow may have stopped falling, but the cold remains,\u201d Mamdani <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NYCMayor\/status\/2016301492781699074?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2016301492781699074%7Ctwgr%5E350a3b1cf54687ca354e7ba3cf02445ceba48d4d%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.foxweather.com%2Flive-news%2Flive-updates-millions-digging-out-thousands-without-power-as-next-winter-storm-threat-looms\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">said<\/a> in a video on Tuesday. \u201cOur city is in the midst of what may be the longest stretch of below freezing temperatures in recorded history. Extreme cold snaps like this are threatening, already 10 of our neighbors have passed away after being found outdoors. We are doing everything in our power to keep New Yorkers safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The New York City ferry <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NYCferry\/status\/2016215538356146209\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">suspended<\/a> service on Tuesday afternoon and remained <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NYCferry\/status\/2016452052415615056\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">closed <\/a>on Wednesday due to ice in the East and Hudson rivers and across the New York harbor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The lingering impact of the storm over the weekend has also forced school closures and remote learning in parts of the country.
