Authorities allege that after his snowboarding career, Wedding \u201cturned to a life of crime\u201d as a narcotics trafficker and led an organization that moved cocaine from South America to the US and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/canada\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Canada<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He is also accused of directing the \u201cdrug-related\u201d murders of two members of a family in Ontario in 2023, the 2024 murder of another victim in Canada over a drug debt and the January 2025 murder of an associate, and FBI witness, in Colombia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">During his first appearance in court in Santa Ana on Monday, Wedding pleaded not guilty to 17 felony charges laid out in two indictments. Wedding, who was wanted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/fbi\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">FBI<\/a> and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), was taken into custody last week after reportedly surrendering at the US embassy in Mexico, Mexican authorities announced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">However, Anthony Colombo, Wedding\u2019s attorney, told reporters after the arraignment that his client had not surrendered and was apprehended, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/livestory\/ryan-wedding-court-appearance-jan26-9.7061646?ts=1769464827213\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">CBC reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe indictments are not evidence, they\u2019re just an accusation,\u201d he said, adding that Wedding was in \u201cgood spirits\u201d and \u201cmentally tough\u201d, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Wedding allegedly worked with the Sinaloa cartel and oversaw an illegal drug operation that generated more than $1bn a year. His alleged enterprise was said to be the largest supplier of cocaine to Canada, according to a separate 2024 indictment from his home country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">At a press conference on Friday, Kash Patel, the FBI director, compared Wedding with Joaquin \u201cEl Chapo\u201d Guzman and Pablo Escobar, describing him as the \u201clargest narco-trafficker in modern times\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis individual and his organization and the Sinaloa Cartel poured narcotics into the streets of North America, and killed too many of our youth and corrupted too many of our citizens,\u201d Patel said. \u201cThat ends today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">US authorities have said that Wedding\u2019s operation trafficked some 60 tons of cocaine a year, but that figure does not appear in the indictment, and security experts have expressed skepticism about the comparisons to El Chapo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThere\u2019s no indication [Wedding] controls territory, nor that he\u2019s at the head of an armed militia, nor that he\u2019s a major player politically,\u201d Stephen Woodman, a security analyst in Guadalajara, Mexico, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jan\/24\/ryan-wedding-olympic-snowboarder-alleged-cocaine-kingpin\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">told the Guardian<\/a> last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The next court date in the case is 11 February, according to a statement provided by the US attorney\u2019s office for the central district of California.
