The powerful winter storm sweeping<\/a> across much of the US over the weekend has been linked to at least 18 deaths.<\/p>\n The deaths have been reported from Texas to New England as many parts of the country grappled with heavy snow<\/a>, ice and dangerous cold.<\/p>\n In Texas, authorities in Frisco said<\/a> that a 16-year-old died in sledding accident, while in the Austin area, a person was found dead<\/a> from apparent hypothermia. Louisiana authorities have reported three<\/a> winter storm-related deaths. In Mississippi, the state\u2019s Governor, Tate Reeves, reported two deaths<\/a> as a result of the storm, in Arkansas, a 17-year-old boy was killed<\/a> in a sledding accident, and in North Carolina, a man was found dead on a highway<\/a>.<\/p>\n In New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said<\/a> over the weekend that five people were found dead outdoors. A woman in Kansas was also said to have died from hypothermia<\/a> and was found covered in snow.<\/p>\n Massachusetts officials have said that a woman died after being struck by a snow plow<\/a>, and Tennessee officials have reported<\/a> three weather-related deaths.<\/p>\n <\/gu-island><\/p>\n As of Monday morning, more than 200 million people from Texas<\/a> to New England were under cold alerts, with forecasters warning that bitter cold could persist through the week in many regions.<\/p>\n The National Weather Service (NWS) said<\/a> on Monday morning that \u201cfrigid air\u201d would spread across the eastern two-thirds of the county in the coming days, \u201cwith widespread sub-zero lows and record cold\u201d expected. The agency said that dangerous wind chills would persist, and \u201cmuch below-normal temperatures may continue into early February\u201d.<\/p>\n More than 800,000<\/a> people were without power nationwide on Monday morning, including more than 250,000 in Tennessee. But by Monday afternoon, that number had dropped to around 700,000 customers without power, including around 230,000 in Tennessee, and 140,000 in Mississippi.<\/p>\n Officials in parts of Mississippi have described the damage caused by the storm as \u201cextensive\u201d<\/a>, saying that additional crews have been brought in to speed up the \u201ctree removal and clearing\u201d and to help with \u201crestoration of replacing poles and lines\u201d.<\/p>\n The University of Mississippi also said<\/a> that it has cancelled classes at the Oxford campus until Sunday, 1 February, \u201cdue to continued extreme winter weather conditions and ongoing recovery efforts\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cThroughout campus, the city and county, there are downed trees and power lines, power outages, falling ice and hazardous road conditions\u201d the school said.<\/p>\n Travel was heavily disrupted over the weekend, with more than 10,500<\/a> US flights cancelled on Sunday.
