{"id":15364,"date":"2026-01-24T17:52:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-24T17:52:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=15364"},"modified":"2026-01-24T17:52:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-24T17:52:18","slug":"andy-burnham-applies-to-stand-for-labour-in-gorton-and-denton-byelection-andy-burnham","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=15364","title":{"rendered":"Andy Burnham applies to stand for Labour in Gorton and Denton byelection | Andy Burnham"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Andy Burnham has formally put himself forward to stand for parliament in the Manchester constituency of Gorton and Denton in what could be the first move in a campaign to replace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/keir-starmer\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Keir Starmer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/greater-manchester\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Greater Manchester<\/a> mayor has announced that he has applied to be a candidate in the upcoming byelection, having submitted an application before the deadline of 5pm on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">His application will have to be accepted by Labour\u2019s national executive committee (NEC) but some of its members have predicted that the party\u2019s ruling body, which is dominated by Starmer allies, will try to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/jan\/22\/starmer-allies-stop-andy-burnham-campaign-block-parliamentary-return\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">prevent Burnham\u2019s return to parliament<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"fd82f439-d44f-465e-8182-42cf38b48fe8\" data-spacefinder-role=\"richLink\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-47fhrn\"><gu-island name=\"RichLinkComponent\" priority=\"feature\" deferuntil=\"idle\" props=\"{&quot;richLinkIndex&quot;:3,&quot;element&quot;:{&quot;_type&quot;:&quot;model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement&quot;,&quot;prefix&quot;:&quot;Related: &quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Starmer faces pressure not to block Andy Burnham\u2019s return to parliament&quot;,&quot;elementId&quot;:&quot;fd82f439-d44f-465e-8182-42cf38b48fe8&quot;,&quot;role&quot;:&quot;richLink&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/jan\/23\/keir-starmer-pressure-not-to-block-andy-burnham-return-parliament&quot;},&quot;ajaxUrl&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/api.nextgen.guardianapps.co.uk&quot;,&quot;format&quot;:{&quot;design&quot;:0,&quot;display&quot;:0,&quot;theme&quot;:0},&quot;isInStarRatingVariant&quot;:false}\"\/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The byelection was called this week after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/jan\/22\/andrew-gwynne-pension-deal-could-open-path-commons-andy-burnham\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">the resignation of the former minister Andrew Gwynne<\/a>, who announced he was standing down because of ill health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Gwynne was formally appointed the crown steward and bailiff of the Manor of Northstead on Friday, which allows him to give up his seat in the House of Commons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The possibility of Burnham, 56, replacing Gwynne, 51, has long been rumoured, because he is considered one of the favourites to replace the prime minister were he to be toppled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Speculation rose to a fever pitch at the party\u2019s conference in Liverpool last year, when Burnham told the Telegraph that Labour MPs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2025\/sep\/25\/andy-burnham-mps-challenge-starmer-labour-leadership-prime-minister-greater-manchester-mayo\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">had contacted him over the summer<\/a> to stand after becoming concerned at Starmer\u2019s unpopularity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">London mayor Sir Sadiq Khan and Labour\u2019s deputy leader, Lucy Powell, both told the Fabian Society\u2019s conference on Saturday that Burnham should be allowed to stand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Khan told the event in central London: \u201cI\u2019m a firm believer in the best team having all the talent playing for them, and if Andy wants to return to parliament, I will try and make some time between now and the byelection to knock on some doors for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Meanwhile Powell, who represents the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/manchester\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Manchester<\/a> Central constituency, said the NEC should be wary of blocking Burnham from standing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She said it should be up to Burnham and party members in the constituency whether he is allowed to be the Labour candidate.
