{"id":14514,"date":"2026-01-22T01:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-22T01:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=14514"},"modified":"2026-01-22T01:30:00","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T01:30:00","slug":"democrats-who-crafted-ice-funding-compromise-question-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=14514","title":{"rendered":"Democrats Who Crafted ICE Funding Compromise Question It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"has-underline\">Top Democrats in<\/span> Congress are turning against a deal that some of their caucuses\u2019 most powerful members reached with Republicans over the weekend to maintain steady funding for U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>Only a day after Senate and House Democratic appropriations leaders said the bill was the best they could do, some of the Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said Wednesday they would oppose it during a final vote.<\/p>\n<p>Civil rights advocates worried that, if the bipartisan deal the appropriations committees reached passes, it will provide cover for ICE after <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2026\/01\/07\/video-ice-shooting-civilian-minneapolis\/\">the killing of Renee Good.<\/a><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-text-align-right\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cEvery dollar more is a dollar that is enabling this bad behavior, and every dollar emboldens these agencies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cEvery dollar more is a dollar that is enabling this bad behavior, and every dollar emboldens these agencies,\u201d said Kate Voigt, a senior policy counsel at the American Civil Liberties Union. \u201cGiving these agencies this much money right now in a business-as-usual appropriations bill is a stamp of approval on their behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The House could vote on the measure Thursday, with a make-or-break Senate vote coming next week.<\/p>\n<p>Even the ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee who led negotiations on the compromise, Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., offered a tepid defense at a House Rules Committee meeting later in the day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is complicated,\u201d she said, \u201cwhen you\u2019re both trying to govern and you\u2019re trying to resist what may be infringements, to thread that needle and try to be able to move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- BLOCK(cta)[0](%7B%22componentName%22%3A%22CTA%22%2C%22entityType%22%3A%22SHORTCODE%22%2C%22optional%22%3Atrue%7D)(%7B%7D) --><!-- END-BLOCK(cta)[0] --><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-primary-bait\"><strong>Primary Bait<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The compromise on funding ICE had barely been announced before drawing a furious response from progressives.<\/p>\n<p>Congress is trying to craft a package of bills that will provide continued funding for the federal government past a January 30 deadline, which was set at the end of the last government shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>The package includes the Department of Homeland Security, the <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2021\/09\/10\/immigration-enforcement-homeland-security-911\/\">parent agency<\/a> for ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which itself houses Border Patrol.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2026\/01\/15\/ice-bill-violence-minneapolis\/\">defunding <\/a>or abolishing ICE, as some progressives have demanded, the bill keeps the agency\u2019s funding flat. Customs and Border Protection would see its regular funding drop by $1.3 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic leaders in the House heard an earful about the bill at a caucus meeting Wednesday. During the meeting, Jeffries said he would vote <a href=\"https:\/\/prospect.org\/2026\/01\/21\/jeffries-wont-whip-vote-against-ice-funding\/\">against it<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/01\/21\/hakeem-jeffries-dhs-ice-funding-democrats\">according<\/a> to multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/house-democratic-leaders-will-oppose-dhs-funding-bill-party-rages-ice-rcna255220\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The bill is already playing into Democratic primaries, where challengers have seized on it as an example of out-of-touch Democratic incumbents.<\/p>\n<p>Chuck Park, a former New York City Council staffer who is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityandstateny.com\/personality\/2025\/12\/chuck-park-focused-protecting-immigrant-families-his-run-congress\/410327\/\">challenging <\/a>Rep. Grace Meng, D-N.Y., said the bill was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@chuckforqueens\/post\/DTyFiPZiWMe\">not a compromise<\/a>. It funds ICE at current levels and offers reforms that don\u2019t get anywhere near solving the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-text-align-left\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAny Democrat who supports this needs to be primaried.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>He continued, \u201cAny Democrat who supports this needs to be primaried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meng, a House Appropriations Committee member, said in a statement that she would oppose the bill on the House floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s clear that ICE must be held accountable. This bill fails to meet this moment,\u201d Meng said. \u201cFor the constituents in my community\u00a0who have been violently detained, for Renee Good and other U.S. Citizens who have been wrongfully targeted by ICE agents,\u00a0and for the law-abiding immigrants\u00a0throughout the United States whose rights have been trampled on, I cannot in good conscience vote for this bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-guardrails-that-aren-t\"><strong>Guardrails That Aren\u2019t<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In defense of the bill, Democratic leaders on the House and Senate appropriations committees have pointed to a handful of provisions they say could provide a check on <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2026\/01\/15\/ice-bill-violence-minneapolis\/\">some of ICE and CBP\u2019s worst abuses.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bill would increase reporting requirements when DHS shuffles funds between agencies. It boosts funding for oversight offices that President Donald Trump\u2019s administration has tried to gut. It would also provide $20 million in additional funding for body cameras.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Senate Appropriations Committee Vice Chair Patty Murray, D-Wash., said that even if Democrats were successful in tanking the bill, another shutdown would be worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe suggestion that a shutdown in this moment might curb the lawlessness of this administration is not rooted in reality: under a CR\u201d \u2014 a continuing resolution that funds the government for a limited period \u2014 \u201cand in a shutdown, this administration can do everything they are already doing \u2014 but without any of the critical guardrails and constraints imposed by a full-year funding bill,\u201d Murray said.<\/p>\n<p>Murray pointed to the $75 billion that congressional Republicans gave to DHS to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/01\/21\/nx-s1-5674887\/ice-budget-funding-congress-trump\">spend over four years<\/a> as it likes as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/07\/01\/trump-big-beautiful-bill-passes-ice-budget\/\">One Big Beautiful Bill Act.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- BLOCK(newsletter)[0](%7B%22componentName%22%3A%22NEWSLETTER%22%2C%22entityType%22%3A%22SHORTCODE%22%2C%22optional%22%3Atrue%7D)(%7B%7D) --><\/p>\n<div class=\"newsletter-embed flex-col items-center print:hidden\" id=\"third-party--article-mid\" data-module=\"InlineNewsletter\" data-module-source=\"web_intercept_20241230_Inline_Signup_Replacement\">\n<div class=\"-mx-5 sm:-mx-10 p-5 sm:px-10 xl:-ml-5 lg:mr-0 xl:px-5 bg-accentLight hidden\" data-name=\"subscribed\">\n<h2 class=\"font-sans font-light uppercase text-[30px] leading-8 text-white tracking-[0.01em] mb-0\">\n      We\u2019re independent of corporate interests \u2014 and powered by members. Others, such as Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., have said they will vote against the DHS funding bill.<\/p>\n<p>There do appear to be some centrist Democrats open to voting for the measure. Appropriations Committee member Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2020\/02\/26\/henry-cuellar-perceptics-hack\/\">Henry Cuellar<\/a>, D-Texas, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/5698856-house-democratic-leaders-dhs-bill-ice-funding\/\">told The Hill<\/a> that he would vote for the bill, citing the oversight and body-camera provisions.<\/p>\n<p>The purported guardrails will do little to curb ICE and CBP, advocates said on a press call on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>ICE is already flouting transparency requirements such as a law allowing <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/05\/20\/trump-prosecuting-democrat-mciver-ice-media\/\">members of Congress to inspect detention facilities<\/a>. The body-camera funding is also toothless, civil rights groups said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgents are committing egregious abuses day in and day out while wearing body cameras, and I would remind everyone that <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2026\/01\/08\/ice-agent-identified-shooting-minneapolis-jonathan-ross\/\">Jonathan Ross <\/a>was in fact holding up his phone and voluntarily filming in the moments before he shot Renee Good,\u201d said Heidi Altman, vice president of policy at the National Immigration Law Center.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, DHS can still shuttle funds within and between agencies, with some restrictions.
