{"id":14391,"date":"2026-01-21T17:21:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T17:21:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=14391"},"modified":"2026-01-21T17:21:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T17:21:18","slug":"white-house-policies-trying-to-drive-federal-employees-to-quit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=14391","title":{"rendered":"White House Policies Trying to Drive Federal Employees to Quit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"has-underline\">A recent National<\/span> Park Service directive to limit high scores on employee evaluations has raised fears of more layoffs after a turbulent year of cuts and resignations.<\/p>\n<p>Staffers at the beloved agency were kept in the dark about why their supervisors were ordered to cap scores. In audio obtained by The Intercept, however, a top regional director said the directives came from top officials in Washington, including the budget office led by Project 2025 architect <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/01\/15\/confirmation-hearing-russell-vought-mass-firings\/\">Russell Vought<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Don Striker, a veteran agency leader who oversees parks in Alaska such as Denali National Park, said the new performance review process was crafted outside the NPS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo the extent that they continue to do things that many of us feel are the reign of terror, that deliberately impact our morale in hopes that they\u2019ll drive us out, that\u2019s OMB and that\u2019s OPM, right?\u201d Striker said, referring to Vought\u2019s Office of Management and Budget and the Office of Personnel Management. \u201cAnd that\u2019s what the performance thing came under.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUltimately,\u201d Striker went on, \u201cit was not in the hands anymore even of the National Park Service political leadership or the Department of the Interior political leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-text-align-right\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just another method of trying to bring morale down.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>NPS officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2025\/12\/12\/national-park-employee-evaluations\/\">told supervisors to limit<\/a> the number of 4s and 5s they give to employees, on a 1-to-5 scale. The period over which employees were evaluated was also compressed to 90 days, the minimum allowable under the law, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/document-library\/human-resources-policy\/memo-2025-guidance-closing-fy-2025-performance-appraisals\">changes imposed <\/a>by Washington.<\/p>\n<p>When the directive to limit high scores was handed down in December, some employees had already received their annual ratings. In response, some supervisors downgraded scores \u2014 occasionally with a note recognizing the original, higher score.<\/p>\n<p>Employees in Alaska and California said their parks\u2019 supervisors decided to respond to the mandate by handing out 3s across the board.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just another method of trying to bring morale down,\u201d said one NPS employee, who asked for anonymity to protect their livelihood, of the new performance review standards. \u201cA lot of people came into the government to do good work. More than 60 percent of federal employees received a 4 or 5 on their performance reviews, according to a 2016 Government Accountability Office<a href=\"https:\/\/www.govexec.com\/management\/2016\/06\/are-so-many-feds-really-exceptional\/128963\/\"> report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Interior Department has said that the new directive is meant to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2025\/12\/12\/national-park-employee-evaluations\/\">normalize<\/a>\u201d ratings and thus \u201censure fair, consistent performance evaluations across all of our parks and programs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Striker echoed that in his comments to NPS employees in Alaska, who were gathered both in person and through teleconferencing.<\/p>\n<p>The agency was trying to \u201cbaseline\u201d performance ratings, Striker said, \u201cto make sure that we\u2019re consistent, not just within our individual work groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Employees who spoke with The Intercept on the condition of anonymity to protect their jobs said that many staffers have been doing the work of two or three colleagues over the past year, thanks to a round of<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/03\/17\/trump-national-park-firings-white-house\/\"> resignations and layoffs <\/a>of probationary employees inspired by Elon Musk\u2019s so-called Department of Government Efficiency.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-text-align-right\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cPeople back in D.C. are willing to shoot hostages.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>As Striker was questioned about the directive to shorten the period over which performances were evaluated, he acknowledged that the 2025 review process had been a \u201ccluster.\u201d He grew more defensive when asked what he was doing to represent Alaska employees of the NPS in Washington, arguing that it was best not to provoke decision-makers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople back in D.C. are willing to shoot hostages,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s a phrase that I\u2019ve heard. Let\u2019s not put ourselves in that breach. It\u2019s just not worth it. It\u2019s just not worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-don-t-let-the-door-hit-you\"><strong>\u201cDon\u2019t Let The Door Hit You<\/strong>\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Striker said his message for employees frustrated by the performance review process was: \u201cGet over it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The consequences of resisting directives from Washington could be dire, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiterally, I do not want to sugarcoat this,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can either do the job, or don\u2019t let the door hit you in the butt. That\u2019s where we are as an organization.
