‘Future of Greenland is only for Greenlanders to decide,’ EU’s von der Leyen reiterates<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen reiterated that \u201cthe future of Greenland<\/a> is only for the Greenlanders to decide\u201d<\/strong> as she warned that Europe needs to \u201ctransform the ways in which we think and act\u201d to step up to challenges posed by the rapidly changing world order.<\/p>\n

She said that Europe needed to realise \u201cwe now live in a world defined by raw power,\u201d<\/strong> adding that \u201cin this increasingly lawless world, Europe<\/a> needs its own levers of power\u201d and abandon its \u201ctraditional caution\u201d to build on its economic might and become more independent.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the European parliament\u2019s plenary session in Strasbourg, von der Leyen also repeated the key lines from her Davos<\/a> speech yesterday,<\/strong> warning that the US threat of tariffs on EU partners over Greenland could send the relations into \u201ca dangerous downward spiral\u201d and \u201conly embolden the very adversaries we are both so committed to keeping out of the strategic landscape.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGreenland is not just a territory in a key region of the world map, and the land rich in critical raw materials, a strategic outpost on emerging global sea routes. It\u2019s all of these things, but above all, Greenland is home to a free and sovereign people.<\/strong> It is a nation with its sovereignty and its right to territorial integrity, and the future of Greenland is only for the Greenlanders to decide,<\/strong>\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Von der Leyen also said \u201cit is more important than ever that we keep focusing on Ukraine,\u201d<\/strong> continuing the bloc\u2019s support for the wartorn country.<\/p>\n
