{"id":14271,"date":"2026-01-21T09:26:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T09:26:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=14271"},"modified":"2026-01-21T09:26:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T09:26:18","slug":"coalition-in-crisis-as-entire-nationals-frontbench-quits-after-division-over-labors-hate-speech-laws-coalition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=14271","title":{"rendered":"Coalition in crisis as entire Nationals frontbench quits after division over Labor\u2019s hate speech laws | Coalition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Coalition has been plunged into chaos after the Nationals quit Sussan Ley\u2019s shadow cabinet en-masse after a split over Labor\u2019s hate speech laws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In a bombshell move that threatens the future of the Coalition, the National party leader, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/david-littleproud\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">David Littleproud<\/a>, and all of his frontbench colleagues agreed to resign their positions at crisis talks on Wednesday night, sources confirmed to Guardian Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The mass exodus came after Ley\u2019s decision to accept the resignation of Nationals senators Ross Cadell, Bridget McKenzie and Susan McDonald after the trio crossed the floor to oppose hate speech laws drafted after the Bondi massacre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The stance, which the Nationals adopted as a party room, put them at odds with the Liberals and the position agreed at shadow cabinet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Ley accepted their resignations on Wednesday, after insisting cabinet solidarity was a non-negotiable principle underpinning the agreement between the Liberals and the Nationals.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Guardian Australian has confirmed Littleproud warned Ley in a letter on Wednesday morning that the other eight Nationals frontbenchers \u2013 including himself \u2013 would quit the shadow ministry if the resignations were accepted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe three shadow cabinet ministers that voted against the bill have offered to resign. As it was a party room decision [to oppose the bill], if these resignations are accepted, the entire National Party ministry will resign to take collective responsibility,\u201d the letter, first Wednesday, Ley said shadow cabinet solidarity \u201cis not optional\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhen the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/coalition\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Coalition<\/a> reformed in May last year, the foundational principle underpinning that agreement was a commitment to shadow cabinet solidarity,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cYesterday, in several conversations, I made it clear to David Littleproud that members of the shadow cabinet could not vote against the shadow cabinet position \u2026 this is an unfortunate circumstance and one that requires action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Ley said she has asked Littleproud to nominate three other Nationals to join the frontbench.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Earlier, multiple senior Coalition sources confirmed to Guardian Australia that Nationals MPs had discussed a \u201cone-in, all-in\u201d approach in which all of their shadow ministers \u2013 including Littleproud \u2013 quit the frontbench if Ley sacked the three senators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a outcome would badly destabilise Ley\u2019s leadership, which has already been under pressure due to poor polls and internal criticism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">One Liberal MP said it was \u201cdisappointing\u201d the Nationals were considering a mass walkout, a day after Labor\u2019s hate speech and gun control laws passed parliament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe Nats all class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Littleproud and other Nationals frontbenchers in the lower house abstained from the vote, which was also technically a breach of shadow cabinet\u2019s position to work with Labor to pass the bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Coalition sources confirmed the Nationals did not object to the position agreed at shadow cabinet on Sunday night, with the country party\u2019s position only hardening on Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Nationals held another party room meeting on Wednesday morning, amid anger at the trio and backbencher Matt Canavan, who cabinet,\u201d he said. \u201cI am willing to take my medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In a statement, McDonald said she supported both the intent of the legislation and the Coalition\u2019s firm stance against antisemitism, hate and extremism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cServing as the shadow minister for resources and Northern Australia, and the shadow cabinet under both Peter Dutton and Sussan Ley has been a privilege. I thank my leader David Littleproud for entrusting me to serve in this position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The legislation, which will allow the government to designate organisations as \u201chate groups\u201d, gives the home affairs minister additional grounds to cancel or reject visas and introduces tougher penalties for religious and spiritual leaders who promote violence, passed the Senate 38 to 22 votes after 11pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Liberal frontbencher Dave Sharma told Channel Nine the trio should have voted with their Coalition colleagues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI was disappointed to see that.
