\u201cI\u2019m 18, and you can\u2019t stop me!\u201d Piper James told her father before she set off backpacking on the other side of the Pacific Ocean \u2013 but the young Canadian woman\u2019s trip to Australia ended in tragedy and trauma.<\/p>\n

Early on Monday, the now-19-year-old was found dead on a beach<\/a> on the world heritage-listed sand island and tourist destination of K\u2019gari (formerly known as Fraser Island) <\/strong>off the Queensland coast, surrounded by a pack of dingoes near the Maheno shipwreck.<\/p>\n

A postmortem into her death was to begin on Wednesday, with Queensland police saying a coroner would examine whether she drowned in dangerous waters off the island\u2019s eastern beaches or was killed by the wild canids \u2013 as well as other \u201cpotential possibilities\u201d.<\/p>\n

Writing that he felt a \u201cneed and want to share some memories\u201d, Todd James posted a series of pictures on social media of his daughter with friends and family enjoying the Canadian outdoors on inflatable rafts, snowboards, dirt bikes, buggies and fighting fires \u2013 she \u201cloved and was proud\u201d to have worked for the British Columbia wildfire services.<\/p>\n

Another series of pictures showed Piper with a friend from Canada who was travelling with her through Australia. The friend had been working with her at a backpackers for six weeks prior to her death and was left \u201chighly traumatised\u201d by it, Queensland police said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur hearts are shattered as we share the tragic loss of our beautiful daughter, Piper,\u201d Todd wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will always remember her infectious laugh and her kind spirit. I admired her strength and determination to go after her dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n

Canadian media reported her mother, Angela James, as saying Piper was \u201chaving the trip of a lifetime\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was very adventurous. She loved motocross. She loved camping, she loved swimming, and she loved surfing. She wanted to learn to surf,\u201d in Australia, local media reported.<\/p>\n

Speaking to a reporter from The Canadian Press, Angela James \u2013 from Vancouver Island \u2013 said she last spoke to Piper early on Saturday morning. Her daughter called before going for a swim to say that she loved her parents and was \u201cthankful for everything they had done\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was just so special. She was just so precious. She was so empathetic. Always worried about other people,\u201d said Angela, adding that her daughter loved animals.<\/p>\n

She said her daughter had fallen \u201cin love\u201d with K\u2019gari.<\/p>\n

The last known sighting of Piper alive was at about 5am on Monday, when she told friends and colleagues at the backpackers that she was headed to the beach.<\/p>\n

Her parents described her as a \u201cbrave little girl\u201d who dreamed of being a pilot like her father, according to the Coast Reporter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Todd wrote that his daughter had been glad he was \u201con board for her trip to Australia\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Lol\u2019, she said, \u2018Because I\u2019m 18, and you can\u2019t stop me!\u2019,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n

\u201cMostly, I loved hearing about and seeing the bonds and friendships she was developing as she grew into her beautiful self.\u201d<\/p>\n

The grieving father wrote that his daughter would \u201cwork hard so she could play hard\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo many are going to miss you, my precious little baby girl. Maybe gone, but how can we ever forget you? The pain \u2026 RIP my baby.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her grandmother also wrote of her broken heart for her \u201cprecious granddaughter\u201d. Penny Vanalstine Marshall said James was \u201cthe most happy spirited girl\u201d with \u201ca spirit of unbridled joy and courage\u201d.<\/p>\n

James was \u201ca beacon of strength and fearless adventure\u201d who was \u201cso kind to everyone she met\u201d, she wrote.<\/p>\n

The Queensland premier, David Crisafulli, said James\u2019s death was \u201creally troubling\u201d and that his government was \u201cdetermined to get to the bottom\u201d of what caused it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got to acknowledge that a young woman, in the prime of her life, has lost her life,\u201d he said at a press conference on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cNineteen years of age, and doing what she loved, on a trip of a lifetime \u2013 and to not go home to her family is really tough\u201d.<\/p>\n

Crisafulli said the \u201cnext step\u201d was for authorities to conduct an autopsy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that\u2019s really important, and while that happens, we should be respectful and we should acknowledge a tragedy for the family, for the broader community on Fraser \/ K\u2019gari\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
