While Europe is pushing back publicly against U.S. President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0over\u00a0Greenland, the language appears softer behind the scenes.<\/p>\n
Trump published\u00a0a text message\u00a0on Tuesday that he received from French President\u00a0Emmanuel Macron, confirmed as genuine by Macron\u2019s office.<\/p>\n
Starting with \u201cMy friend,\u201d Macron\u2019s tone was more deferential than the criticism that France and some of its European partner nations are\u00a0openly voicing\u00a0against Trump\u2019s push to wrest Greenland from NATO ally Denmark.<\/p>\n
Before broaching\u00a0the Greenland dispute, Macron opted in his message to first talk about other issues where he and Trump seem roughly on the same page.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are totally in line on Syria. We can do great things on Iran,\u201d the French leader wrote in English.<\/p>\n
Then, he added: \u201cI do not understand what you are doing on Greenland,\u201d immediately followed by: \u201cLet us try to build great things.\u201d<\/p>\n
That was the only mention that Macron made of the semi-autonomous Danish territory in the two sections of message that Trump published. It wasn\u2019t immediately clear from Trump\u2019s post when he received the message.<\/p>\n
World leaders\u2019 private messages to each other rarely make it verbatim into the public domain \u2014 enabling them to project one face publicly and another to each other.<\/p>\n
But Trump \u2014 as is his wont across multiple domains \u2014 is casting traditions and diplomatic niceties to the wind and, in the process, lifting back the curtain on goings-on that usually aren\u2019t seen.<\/p>\n
This week,\u00a0a text message that Trump sent\u00a0to Norway\u2019s prime minister also became public, released by the Norwegian government and confirmed by the White House.<\/p>\n
In it, Trump linked his aggressive\u00a0stance on Greenland\u00a0to last year\u2019s decision not to award him the Nobel Peace Prize.<\/p>\n
\u201cConsidering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace,\u201d the message read.<\/p>\n
It concluded, \u201cThe World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland.\u201d<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, Trump also published a flattering message from Mark Rutte, secretary general of NATO, which the alliance also confirmed as authentic.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am committed to finding a way forward on Greenland,\u201d Rutte wrote. \u201cCan\u2019t wait to see you. Yours, Mark.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rutte has declined to speak publicly about Greenland despite growing concern about Trump\u2019s threats to \u201cacquire\u201d the island and what that would mean for the territorial integrity of NATO ally Denmark. Pressed last week about Trump\u2019s designs on Greenland and warnings from Denmark that any U.S. military action might mean the end of NATO, Rutte said: \u201cI can never comment on that. That\u2019s impossible in public.\u201d<\/p>\n
Macron likes to say that he can get Trump on the phone any time he wants. He proved it last September by\u00a0making a show\u00a0of calling up the president from a street in New York, to tell Trump that police officers were blocking him to let a VIP motorcade pass.<\/p>\n
\u201cGuess what? I\u2019m waiting in the street because everything is frozen for you!\u201d Macron said as cameras filmed the scene.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a safe bet that Macron must know by now \u2014 a year into\u00a0Trump\u2019s second spell in office\u00a0\u2014 that there\u2019s always a risk that a private message to Trump could be made public.<\/p>\n
Macron said Tuesday that he had \u201cno particular reaction\u201d to the message\u2019s publication when a journalist asked him about it.<\/p>\n
\u201cI take responsibility for everything that I do. It\u2019s my habit to be coherent between what I say on the outside and what I do in a private manner. That\u2019s all.\u201d<\/p>\n
Still, the difference between Macron\u2019s public and private personas was striking.<\/p>\n
Most remarkably, the French leader told Trump in his message that he would be willing to invite representatives from both Ukraine and Russia to a meeting later this week in Paris \u2014 an idea that Macron has not voiced publicly.<\/p>\n
The Russians could be hosted \u201cin the margins,\u201d Macron suggested, hinting at the potential awkwardness of inviting Moscow representatives while France is also backing Ukraine with military and other support against Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s invasion.<\/p>\n
Macron wrote that the meeting could also include \u201cthe danish, the syrians\u201d and the G7 nations \u2014 which include the United States.<\/p>\n
The French president added: \u201clet us have a dinner together in Paris together on thursday before you go back to the us.\u201d<\/p>\n
He then signed off simply with \u201cEmmanuel.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite Macron\u2019s persistent efforts, in both of Trump\u2019s terms, not to ruffle his feathers, any payback has been mixed, at best.<\/p>\n
Trump bristled on Monday,\u00a0threatening punitive tariffs, when told that Macron has no plans to join Trump\u2019s new\u00a0Board of Peace\u00a0that will supervise\u00a0the next phase\u00a0of the Gaza peace plan, despite receiving an invitation.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, nobody wants him because he\u2019s going to be out of office very soon,\u201d Trump told reporters, even through the French leader has more than a year left in office before the end of his second and last term in 2027.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll put a 200% tariff on his wines and champagnes and he\u2019ll join,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
