{"id":1377,"date":"2025-12-07T13:09:21","date_gmt":"2025-12-07T13:09:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=1377"},"modified":"2025-12-07T13:09:21","modified_gmt":"2025-12-07T13:09:21","slug":"two-marathon-organisers-arrested-in-iran-over-women-running-without-hijabs-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=1377","title":{"rendered":"Two marathon organisers arrested in Iran over women running without hijabs | Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Judicial authorities in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/iran\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Iran<\/a> have arrested two organisers of a marathon held on an island off the country\u2019s southern coast after images emerged showing women taking part in the race without hijabs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The arrests on Saturday come as the authorities face increasing criticism from ultraconservatives who accuse them of inadequate efforts to enforce a mandatory headscarf law for women amid fears of growing western influence on the Islamic republic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Online images of the marathon on Friday, which took place on Kish Island and attracted about 5,000 participants, showed a number of women competing without headscarves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cTwo of the main organisers of the competition were arrested on warrants,\u201d the judiciary\u2019s Mizan news website reported on Saturday. \u201cOne of those arrested is an official in the Kish free zone, and the other works for the private company that organised the race,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The judiciary said a criminal case had been opened against the organisers of the race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cDespite previous warnings regarding the need to comply with the country\u2019s current laws and regulations, as well as religious, customary and professional principles \u2026 the event was held in a way that violated public decency,\u201d the local prosecutor was quoted as saying in Mizan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cConsidering the violations that occurred and based on the laws and regulations, a criminal case has been filed against the officials and agents organising this event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Conservative-aligned outlets, including Tasnim and Fars, had earlier condemned the marathon as indecent and disrespectful to Islamic laws enforced after the 1979 Islamic revolution that toppled the US-backed shah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Although women in Iran are required to cover their hair and wear modest, loose-fitting clothing in public, observance of the hijab rules has become more sporadic since the protests in 2022 that followed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2022\/sep\/16\/iranian-woman-dies-after-being-beaten-by-morality-police-over-hijab-law\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">death in custody of Mahsa Amini<\/a>, a young Kurdish woman arrested over an alleged dress code breach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Earlier this week, a majority of lawmakers accused the judiciary of failing to uphold the hijab law.
