{"id":13492,"date":"2026-01-18T17:17:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-18T17:17:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=13492"},"modified":"2026-01-18T17:17:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-18T17:17:09","slug":"uk-politics-constantly-suffering-from-online-disinformation-says-labour-mp-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=13492","title":{"rendered":"UK politics \u2018constantly suffering\u2019 from online disinformation, says Labour MP | Politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Online disinformation campaigns, including Iranian bot farms promoting Scottish nationalism and biased algorithms depicting London as \u201can overwhelmingly dangerous\u201d city, are seeking to undermine British democracy, a senior Labour MP has warned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Emily Thornberry, the Labour chair of the foreign affairs select committee, said online disinformation about the UK was being promoted by Donald Trump and other US and UK politicians, and Britain was \u201cconstantly suffering from disinformation campaigns from both state and non-state actors\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Thornberry said it was time to challenge tech companies over \u201cthe threats that social media pose to our society\u201d. The committee has written to X, Meta and TikTok <a href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/committee\/78\/foreign-affairs-committee\/news\/211321\/foreign-affairs-calls-x-meta-and-tiktok-to-give-evidence-on-foreign-disinformation-threat\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">calling on them to give evidence<\/a> on the threat posed by foreign disinformation targeting the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe must start a proper dialogue with social media companies about the ways their platforms are being used to spread lies from abroad and undermine our democracy. And we need to do it urgently,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Thornberry accused Reform UK, whose MPs have repeatedly described UK cities as crime-ridden and dangerous, of repeating false claims that were then amplified, while biased algorithms promoted \u201cstrife and far-right messages\u201d. Reform politicians were \u201craking in tens of thousands of pounds from X\u201d and rewarding sites that sowed anger and spread disinformation, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Last week the Reform mayoral candidate Laila Cunningham said London was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2026\/jan\/07\/reform-london-mayor-candidate-laila-cunningham-accused-talking-down-capital\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">\u201cno longer safe\u201d<\/a>, while the party leader, Nigel Farage, said London was \u201cin the grip of a crime wave\u201d, despite a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2026\/jan\/12\/why-londons-lowest-rate-in-more-than-a-decade-is-drawing-attention#:~:text=That%20gives%20a%20homicide%20rate,2021%2C%20to%20eight%20in%202025.\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">fall in multiple crime types<\/a> including murder. He found evidence of new accounts that appeared to use AI-generated profile pictures and post solely about crime in London.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Thornberry said: \u201cWe are seeing lies that start in bot farms and are then disseminated on social media sites become statements of fact from the likes of the US president, and increasingly from politicians here at home. The UK Defence Journal reported that a second internet blackout had resulted in the bots <a href=\"https:\/\/ukdefencejournal.org.uk\/iranian-linked-scottish-accounts-fall-silent-again\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">being silenced again<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In his evidence to the committee, Vijay Rangarajan, the chief executive of the Electoral Commission, argued that the UK did not currently have sufficient safeguards against an algorithmic bias.
