Thousands of Greenlanders carefully marched across snow and ice to take a stand against Donald Trump<\/a> on Saturday. They held signs of protest, waved their national flag and chanted \u201cGreenland is not for sale\u201d in the face of increasing threats of an American takeover.<\/p>\n

Just as they finished their trek from the small downtown of Greenland\u2019s capital city Nuuk to the US consulate, the news broke that Trump had announced he would charge a 10% tariff on eight European countries from February over their opposition to US control of Greenland<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought this day couldn\u2019t get any worse, but it just did,\u201d Malik Dollerup-Scheibel said after the Associated Press told him about Trump\u2019s announcement. \u201cIt just shows he has no remorse for any kind of human being now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump has long said he thinks the US should own the strategically located and mineral-rich island, which is a self-governing territory of Greenland. Trump intensified his calls a day after the military operation to oust former Venezuelan president Nicol\u00e1s Maduro earlier this month.<\/p>\n

Dollerup-Scheibel, a 21-year-old Greenlander, and the Greenland prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, were among what others described as the island\u2019s biggest protest, drawing nearly a quarter of Nuuk\u2019s population.<\/p>\n

Others held rallies and solidarity marches across the Danish realm, including in Copenhagen, as well as in the capital of the Inuit-governed territory of Nunavut in Canada\u2019s far north.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is important for the whole world,\u201d Danish protester Elise Riechie said as she held Danish and Greenlandic flags in Copenhagen. \u201cThere are many small countries. None of them are for sale.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Nuuk, Greenlanders of all ages listened to traditional songs as they walked to the consulate. Marie Pedersen, a 47-year-old Greenlander, said it was important to bring her children to the rally \u201cto show them that they\u2019re allowed to speak up\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to keep our own country and our own culture, and our family safe,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Her nine-year-old daughter, Alaska, crafted her own \u201cGreenland is not for sale\u201d sign. The girl said her teachers have addressed the controversy and taught them about Nato at school.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey tell us how to stand up if you\u2019re being bullied by another country or something,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Tom Olsen, a police officer in Nuuk, said Saturday\u2019s protest was the biggest he\u2019s ever seen there.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope it can show him that we stand together in Europe,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are not going down without a fight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tillie Martinussen, a former member of Greenland\u2019s parliament, said she hopes the Trump administration will \u201cabandon this crazy idea\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey started out touting themselves as our friends and allies, that they wanted to make Greenland better for us than the Danes would,\u201d she said, as others chanted in the background. \u201cAnd now they\u2019re just plain threatening us.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added that the push to preserve Nato and Greenland\u2019s autonomy were more important than facing tariffs, though she added that she was not dismissing the potential economic impact.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a fight for freedom,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s for Nato, it\u2019s for everything the western Hemisphere has been fighting for since world war two.\u201d<\/p>\n

But when the AP asked Louise Lennert Olsen what she would say to Trump, the 40-year-old Greenlandic nurse instead said she wanted to give a message to the American people.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would really like them to support our wish to be Greenland as we are now,\u201d she said as she marched through Nuuk. \u201cI hope they will stand against their own president. Because I can\u2019t believe they just stand and watch and do nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
