Instead, the Pentagon is trying to turn this independent newsroom into a mouthpiece for the administration\u2019s political messaging,\u201d Tim Richardson, journalism and disinformation program director for PEN America, said <a href=\"https:\/\/pen.org\/press-release\/effort-to-control-stars-and-stripes-newspaper-threatens-press-freedom\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis action tramples both the first amendment and the congressional mandate that the publication remain editorially independent. As President Trump proposes a significant increase in defense department spending and new foreign military operations, the US needs more independent reporting, not less.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cCongress must continue to protect Stars and Stripes\u2019 editorial independence and ensure the administration allows it to serve military members free from political influence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Erik Slavin, the newspaper\u2019s editor in chief, was equally forthright in a message to staff <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/theaters\/us\/2026-01-15\/pentagon-refocus-stars-and-stripes-content-20415816.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">published in Stars and Stripes<\/a>. \u201cThe people who risk their lives in defense of the Constitution have earned the right to the press freedoms of the First Amendment,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe will not compromise on serving them with accurate and balanced coverage, holding military officials to account when called for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In December, the Pentagon press corps, a longstanding alliance of journalists from traditional, independent media groups, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/dec\/06\/pentagon-press-corps-rightwing-takeover\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">resigned en masse<\/a> over new policies set by the US defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, to restrict their activities. Its articles and widespread circulation of 1.2m were credited with boosting the morale of US troops during the second world war by connecting them to life back home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It was the first to publish the iconic photograph of US marines <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Raising_the_Flag_on_Iwo_Jima#\/media\/File:Raising_the_Flag_on_Iwo_Jima,_larger_-_edit1.jpg\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">raising the American flag at Iwo Jima<\/a> in 1945, which won a Pulitzer prize for photographer Joe Rosenthal; and in 2015 an investigation by its reporter Travis Tritten led to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/feb\/04\/brian-williams-forced-retract-feel-good-iraq-war-story-10-years-later\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">downfall of the veteran NBC news anchor Brian Williams<\/a>, who falsely claimed he was in an army helicopter that was brought down by rocket fire in Iraq.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"71c3836a-5e67-48d2-b42e-35748a403fb7\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-fd61eq\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">American GIs read the news of Adolf Hitler\u2019s death in Stars and Stripes in 1945.<\/span> Photograph: Corbis\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">While formally part of the Pentagon\u2019s media operations, Stars and Stripes has traditionally been protected by a congressional mandate and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esd.whs.mil\/Portals\/54\/Documents\/DD\/issuances\/dodd\/512211p.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">defense department directive<\/a> that states: \u201cThere shall be a free flow of news and information to its readership without news management or censorship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Donald Trump has pursued an aggressive anti-press policy since returning to the White House a year ago, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/17\/business\/media\/trump-lawsuit-new-york-times.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">filing lawsuits<\/a> against outlets that have been critical of him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Earlier this week the FBI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jan\/14\/fbi-raid-washington-post-hannah-natanson\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">raided the home of a Washington Post reporter<\/a> in Virginia; and on Thursday Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, launched an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/karoline-leavitts-clash-with-reporter-at-white-house-goes-viral-11370155\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">extraordinary personal tirade<\/a> during a press briefing against a reporter for the Hill who asked a question about last week\u2019s killing of an unarmed US citizen by a federal immigration officer in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The anti-media push has coincided with a dramatic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/dec\/23\/violence-against-journalists-increase-trump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">increase in violence against journalists<\/a> in the US.
