{"id":12916,"date":"2026-01-16T13:26:16","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T13:26:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=12916"},"modified":"2026-01-16T13:26:16","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T13:26:16","slug":"brazils-bolsonaro-finds-novel-way-to-reduce-27-year-sentence-reading-books-jair-bolsonaro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=12916","title":{"rendered":"Brazil\u2019s Bolsonaro finds novel way to reduce 27-year sentence: reading books | Jair Bolsonaro"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Jair Bolsonaro\u2019s lawyers appear to have been reading up on the country\u2019s penal code and have found a way to help their client reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/nov\/25\/jair-bolsonaro-brazil-prison\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">the 27-year prison sentence<\/a> he received last year for plotting a coup: reading books.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">There is only one problem: the former far-right Brazilian president has never been known as a bibliophile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cSorry, I don\u2019t have time to read,\u201d Bolsonaro once declared. \u201cIt\u2019s been three years since I read a book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Brazilian law contains a literary device through which book-reading inmates can cut their sentences by four days for each title read. On Thursday, a supreme court judge authorised the disgraced former president to take part in the scheme after a request from his legal team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Bolsonaro, a former paratrooper famed for his hostility to democracy, minorities, the Amazon rainforest and the arts, is unlikely to appreciate the approved reading list.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It includes Brazilian works on Indigenous rights, racism, the environment and the violence meted out by the country\u2019s 1964-85 dictatorship \u2013 a regime Bolsonaro openly supported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">One title, Ana Maria Gon\u00e7alves\u2019 950-page Um Defeito de Cor (A Colour Defect), tells \u201cthe history of Brazil \u2026 from the point of view of a Black woman\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Also featured is, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/philipbunting.com\/books\/democracy\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Democracy<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/philipbunting.com\/books\/democracy\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">!<\/a>, an age-appropriate non-fiction picture book by the English-born author-illustrator Philip Bunting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Some of the books on the list, such as Leo Tolstoy\u2019s War and Peace and Miguel de Cervantes\u2019 Don Quixote, are more than 1,000 pages long.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Bolsonaro did once appear in public with a similarly-sized tome: Winston Churchill\u2019s 1,000-plus page Memoirs of the Second World War but it is unclear if the former president read it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In order to benefit from the sentence reduction scheme, prisoners must prove they have actually read the books by submitting written reports to prison authorities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Asked to name his favourite book during the 2018 presidential election, Bolsonaro plumped for one by <a href=\"https:\/\/agenciabrasil.ebc.com.br\/en\/geral\/noticia\/2015-10\/colonel-identified-left-wing-militant-torturer-died-brasilia\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Carlos Alberto Brilhante Ustra<\/a>, a notorious army colonel accused of torturing hundreds of prisoners during the dictatorship. \u201cIt\u2019s a real story about Brazil \u2026 with facts, with data, with places with real episodes,\u201d enthused Bolsonaro who was this week transferred to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/nov\/20\/jair-bolsonaro-prison-former-president-brazil\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">a maximum security prison<\/a> in the capital, Bras\u00edlia, after spending Christmas imprisoned at a federal police base.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Ustra\u2019s book does not feature on the justice system\u2019s reading list but it does contain one title, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2024\/dec\/04\/film-brazil-dictatorship-i-m-still-here\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Marcelo Rubens Paiva\u2019s I\u2019m Still Here<\/a>, about the plight of prisoners who disappeared into such torture centres.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>#Brazils #Bolsonaro #finds #reduce #27year #sentence #reading #books #Jair #Bolsonaro<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jair Bolsonaro\u2019s lawyers appea&hellip; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":12917,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/12916"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=12916"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/12916\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media\/12917"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=12916"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=12916"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=12916"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
