Donald Trump threatened on Thursday to invoke the Insurrection Act in Minnesota in response to protests in Minneapolis<\/a> against federal immigration enforcement operations, as Minnesota\u2019s governor, Tim Walz, overnight urged demonstrators in Minneapolis to be peaceful amid escalating tensions.<\/p>\n In a post<\/a> on Truth Social on Thursday morning, Trump said he would institute the Insurrection Act and \u201cquickly put an end to the travesty that is taking place\u201d in Minnesota if the \u201ccorrupt politicians of Minnesota don\u2019t obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of ICE\u201d.<\/p>\n Later on Thursday morning, Walz put out a statement: \u201cI am making a direct appeal to the president: let\u2019s turn the temperature down. Stop this campaign of retribution. This is not who we are. And an appeal to Minnesotans: I know this is scary. We can \u2013\u00a0we must \u2013\u00a0speak out loudly, urgently but also peacefully. We cannot fan the flames of chaos. That\u2019s what he wants.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump\u2019s warning on Thursday that he might invoke the Insurrection Act came as, overnight, Walz urged people in Minneapolis to protest peacefully after it was reported on Wednesday evening that a federal officer had shot a man<\/a> in the leg during an immigration enforcement operation on the north side of the city.<\/p>\n The incident sparked protests in Minneapolis on Wednesday night, as the city remains on edge just one week after a federal immigration officer there shot and killed<\/a> Renee Nicole Good.<\/p>\n \u201cState investigators have been on the scene in North Minneapolis,\u201d Walz wrote<\/a> on X overnight. \u201cI know you\u2019re angry. I\u2019m angry. What Donald Trump wants is violence in the streets. But Minnesota will remain an island of decency, of justice, of community, and of peace. Don\u2019t give him what he wants.\u201d<\/p>\n The Guardian reported<\/a> that several hundred protesters gathered at the scene of the shooting on Wednesday night. At a news conference later, the Minneapolis police chief, Brian O\u2019Hara, said that protesters had been \u201cengaging in unlawful behavior\u201d and urged people to leave the area.<\/p>\n The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has said that the shooting occurred on Wednesday as \u201cfederal law enforcement officers were conducting a targeted traffic stop in Minneapolis of an illegal alien from Venezuela\u201d. The DHS alleged that the man<\/a> resisted and attacked an officer, and said that two other individuals emerged from a \u201cnearby apartment and also attacked\u201d the officer, who, the department said \u201cfired a defensive shot to defend his life\u201d. The federal government\u2019s account could not immediately be verified.<\/p>\n The city of Minneapolis<\/a> has said that the man who was shot was taken to a local hospital with \u201capparent non-life-threatening injuries\u201d.<\/p>\n On Wednesday evening, Walz delivered remarks<\/a> on the ongoing federal presence in Minnesota, in which he said that \u201cnews reports simply don\u2019t do justice to the level of chaos and disruption and trauma the federal government is raining down upon our communities\u201d.<\/p>\n Walz said that between 2,000 and 3,000 armed federal agents had been deployed across the state and claimed that the ICE agents, whom he described as \u201carmed\u201d, \u201cmasked\u201d and \u201cundertrained\u201d, were \u201cgoing door to door ordering people to point out where their neighbors of color live\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019re pulling over people indiscriminately, including US citizens, and demanding to see their papers,\u201d Walz said.<\/p>\n \u201cJust plain grabbing Minnesotans and shoving them into unmarked vans, kidnapping innocent people with no warning and no due process,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n \u201cLet\u2019s be very, very clear,\u201d Walz said. \u201cThis long ago stopped being a matter of immigration enforcement. Instead, it\u2019s a campaign of organized brutality against the people of Minnesota by our own federal government.\u201d<\/p>\n During his remarks, Walz called on Trump and Kristi Noem, the homeland security secretary, to \u201cend this occupation\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cYou\u2019ve done enough,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n On Thursday, Noem told reporters that she had \u201cno plans to pull out of Minnesota\u201d and describes the conditions on the ground in Minnesota \u201cas violent, and a violation of the law in many places\u201d.<\/p>\n Noem also said she discussed the Insurrection Act with Trump on Thursday morning, and that Trump \u201ccertainly has the constitutional authority to utilize that\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cIf anything doesn\u2019t change with Governor Walz, I don\u2019t anticipate the streets getting any safer or more peaceful,\u201d Noem added.<\/p>\n Multiple federal prosecutors in Minnesota and Washington DC have resigned<\/a> over the Trump administration\u2019s handling of the investigation into the fatal shooting of Good. Six attorneys from the US attorney\u2019s office in Minnesota quit on Tuesday, reportedly over the justice department\u2019s reluctance to investigate the ICE agent who fatally shot Good.
