Top aide Stephen Miller even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/09\/nato-trump-greenland-war-invade-defense.html\">proclaimed<\/a> that \u201cnobody\u2019s going to fight the United States militarily over the future of Greenland.\u201d But in the case of military attack, Danish troops are required to shoot first and ask questions later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDanish military units have a duty to defend Danish territory if it is subjected to an armed attack, including by taking immediate defensive action if required,\u201d Tobias Roed Jensen, spokesperson for the Danish Defense Command, told The Intercept, referencing a 1952 royal decree that applies to the entire Kingdom of Denmark, including Greenland.<\/p>\n<p>Jensen said that the decree ensures that \u201cDanish forces can act to defend the Danish Kingdom in situations where Danish territory or Danish military units are attacked, even if circumstances make it impossible to await further political or military instruction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fact that Denmark\u2019s small military says it is ready to defend Greenland hasn\u2019t deterred U.S. imperial ambitions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne way or the other, we\u2019re going to have Greenland,\u201d President Donald Trump<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/greenland-denmark-trump-vance-meeting-6a9ab923e04411cf518ec3e0f6a67e38\"> said<\/a> on Sunday. On Monday, Rep. Randy Fine, R-Fla., introduced legislation authorizing Trump \u201cto take whatever steps necessary to annex or acquire Greenland as a territory of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That same day, a bipartisan House coalition, led by Reps. Bill Keating, D-Mass., and Don Bacon, R-Neb., introduced the No Funds for NATO Invasion Act. The legislation would prohibit any federal funds from being made available for the invasion of any NATO member state or territory, and prohibit any officer or employee of the U.S. from taking action to execute an invasion of any NATO member state or territory.<\/p>\n<p>Three sources on Capitol Hill told The Intercept that Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del. \u2014 the ranking Democrat on the Defense Appropriations subcommittee \u2014 has resisted the addition of similar language to the pending defense appropriations bill, as to not derail negotiations with Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrankly, it\u2019s a massive unforced error,\u201d a congressional aide told The Intercept. \u201cBy refusing to dig in on the NATO language, Coons is giving the GOP exactly what they want without getting anything in return, and he\u2019s doing it at the expense of our most critical alliances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coons is also leading a bipartisan, bicameral group of lawmakers on a trip to Copenhagen to meet with Danish and Greenlandic government officials this week.\u00a0His office did not respond to requests for comment prior to publication.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland will meet Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House on Wednesday, Danish Foreign Affairs Minister Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen\u00a0told reporters.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"has-underline\">The United States<\/span> already has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersonschriever.spaceforce.mil\/pituffik-sb-greenland\/\">military foothold<\/a> in Greenland, the world\u2019s largest island that is not a continent. The U.S. has a long-standing military garrison, Pituffik Space Base, which was formerly known as Thule Air Base. The War Department\u2019s northernmost installation is key to U.S. missile warning, missile defense, and space surveillance missions, including sophisticated radars and satellite command and control from Pituffik Tracking Station. Last week, defense contractor InDyne Inc. was awarded a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.war.gov\/News\/Contracts\/Contract\/Article\/4371691\/\">little-noticed billion-dollar contract<\/a> for missile warning, missile defense, and space domain awareness mission services at six sites, including Pituffik.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/rollcall.com\/factbase\/trump\/transcript\/donald-trump-press-gaggle-air-force-one-january-11-2026\">repeated baseless claims<\/a> that there are \u201cRussian destroyers and submarines and China destroyers and submarines all over the place\u201d in Greenland and that\u00a0\u201cRussia or China will\u201d take over if the U.S. doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Lopsided does not begin to capture the disparity between the armed forces of the United States and Denmark. The former has around 1.3 million active-duty personnel. The latter \u2014 just 13,100. \u201cTheir defense is two dog sleds,\u201d Trump said of Greenland.<\/p>\n<p>Danish Defense Command acknowledged that the Sirius Dog Sled Patrol is a part of the military forces. Based at Daneborg in East Greenland, it consists of about a dozen soldiers, in addition to the canines, and enforces Danish sovereignty and law enforcement authority in the world\u2019s largest national park, which covers almost the entire northeast of Greenland.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BLOCK(cta)[0](%7B%22componentName%22%3A%22CTA%22%2C%22entityType%22%3A%22SHORTCODE%22%2C%22optional%22%3Atrue%7D)(%7B%7D) --><\/p>\n<p><!-- END-BLOCK(cta)[0] --><\/p>\n<p>Danish Defense forces also have modest numbers of troops stationed at bases around Greenland, including Station Nord, the northernmost military base in the world in northeast Greenland, the Royal Danish Air Force Detachment Greenland in Kangerlussuaq in the west, a facility at Mestersvig in the east, a logistics hub at Gr\u00f8nnedal in the southwest, and a liaison detachment at Pituffik, in the northwest. When alerted, a Danish Arctic Response Force \u2014 including aircraft and ships \u2014 stands ready to support forces in Greenland.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesperson Louise Hedegaard said the Arctic Command\u2019s sea capabilities include \u201cinspection vessels,\u201d while air capabilities include Bombardier Challenger maritime surveillance aircraft and Seahawk helicopters, as well as helicopters from Air Greenland. Immediately after the war, the Danish government tried unsuccessfully to terminate the agreement and rebuffed a 1946 U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/nordics.info\/show\/artikel\/buying-greenland-trump-truman-and-the-pearl-of-the-mediterranean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">offer of $100 million in gold<\/a> for Greenland.<\/p>\n<p>Under pressure from the U.S., the 1941 pact was replaced with a sweeping Cold War-era agreement. The Greenland Defense Agreement of 1951 provides the U.S. with \u201cfree access to and movement between the defense areas throughout Greenland, including the territorial waters, by land, sea, and air.\u201d\u00a0While it does not give the United States the right to establish facilities by fiat \u2014 Danish agreement is required \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/avalon.law.yale.edu\/20th_century\/den001.asp\">pact<\/a> allows the United States to \u201cconstruct, install, maintain, and operate\u201d military bases across Greenland, \u201chouse personnel,\u201d and \u201ccontrol landings, takeoffs, anchorages, moorings, movements, and operation of ships, aircraft, and waterborne craft.\u201d The pact was signed to ensure \u201cthe preservation of peace and security.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump acknowledged his ability to beef up the U.S. military presence on Sunday. \u201cWe have bases on Greenland,\u201d he told reporters. \u201cWe can put a lot of soldiers there right now if I want.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 1979, Greenlandic home rule\u00a0came into force, and in 2009,\u00a0self-rule\u00a0was introduced, meaning that Denmark today recognizes Greenland as an autonomous nation. Greenlanders have the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/06\/22\/world\/europe\/22greenland.html\">right to hold a referendum on independence<\/a>,\u00a0and Danish officials say the island\u2019s 57,000 inhabitants have a right to decide their future. A 2025 survey found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.berlingske.dk\/politik\/overvaeldende-flertal-i-ny-maaling-groenlaenderne-afviser-trump\">85 percent of Greenlanders<\/a> do not want to join the U.S. Just 6 percent of respondents said they were in favor of an American takeover.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has been clear that he is not interested in expanding U.S. access via a new agreement or pact that falls short of a takeover or annexation. Trump told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/08\/us\/politics\/trump-interview-power-morality.html\">New York Times<\/a> that \u201cownership is very important.\u201d He continued, \u201cThat\u2019s what I feel is psychologically needed for success. I think that ownership gives you a thing that you can\u2019t do, whether you\u2019re talking about a lease or a treaty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Denmark is a founding <a href=\"https:\/\/denmark.dk\/society-and-business\/denmark-in-the-world\">member<\/a> of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, which was created in 1949 by the United States, Canada, and several Western European nations.\u00a0Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2018\/07\/11\/trump-stuns-nato-leaders-claiming-germany-totally-controlled-russia\/\">routinely denigrates the group<\/a>. \u201cI DOUBT NATO WOULD BE THERE FOR US IF WE REALLY NEEDED THEM,\u201d Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/115854352740910460\">wrote<\/a> on Truth Social last week. The Danish military fought with NATO as part of the U.S. wars in <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryhealth.bmj.com\/content\/170\/6\/465\">Afghanistan and Iraq<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The NATO alliance consists of 32 member states from North America and Europe. Article 5 of the NATO treaty states that any armed attack against one of the member states is considered an attack against all members, and other members shall assist the attacked nation with armed forces, if necessary. It was, until recently, unthinkable that one member would attack another.<\/p>\n<p>Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that a U.S. military takeover of Greenland would signal the end of the NATO alliance. \u201cIf the United States chooses to attack another NATO country militarily, then everything stops,\u201d\u00a0he<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2026\/01\/08\/danish-soldiers-would-shoot-back-if-invaded-government-confirms\"> told<\/a> Danish broadcaster TV2 last week.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"has-underline\">Rubio told members<\/span> of Congress in a classified briefing\u00a0that Trump wants to buy Greenland from Denmark, two government officials told The Intercept. But in public comments, he would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2026\/01\/07\/trump-administration-greenland-purchase-military-action\/88064105007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">not rule out military action<\/a> in Greenland.<\/p>\n<p>During his second term Trump has launched attacks on <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/06\/23\/trump-iran-nuclear-strikes\/\">Iran<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centcom.mil\/MEDIA\/PRESS-RELEASES\/Press-Release-View\/Article\/4121311\/centcom-forces-kill-isis-chief-of-global-operations-who-also-served-as-isis-2\/\">Iraq<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/12\/25\/trump-nigeria-isis-attacks-airstrikes\/\">Nigeria<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/02\/04\/trump-airstrike-somalia\/\">Somalia<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.centcom.mil\/MEDIA\/PRESS-RELEASES\/Press-Release-View\/Article\/4074572\/centcom-forces-kill-an-al-qaeda-affiliate-hurras-al-din-leader-in-northwest-syr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Syria<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2026\/01\/03\/venzuela-war-nicolas-maduro-airstrikes-caracas-trump\/\">Venezuela<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/03\/26\/signal-chat-yemen-strike\/\">Yemen<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/collections\/license-to-kill\/\">on civilians in boats<\/a> in the\u00a0Caribbean\u00a0Sea and Pacific Ocean, despite\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/10\/11\/qatar-trump-gaza-ceasefire\/\">claiming<\/a>\u00a0to be a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/responsiblestatecraft.org\/trump-inauguration-speech-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">peacemaker<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Under the Greenland Annexation and Statehood Act, <a href=\"https:\/\/fine.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=118\">introduced by Fine<\/a>, Trump would be authorized to \u201cannex or otherwise acquire Greenland as a territory of the United States\u201d and seeks to \u201cexpedite congressional approval of \u2026 statehood for Greenland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Rep. Jimmy Gomez, D-Calif., introduced the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/BILLS-119hr7013ih\/pdf\/BILLS-119hr7013ih.pdf\">Greenland Sovereignty Protection Act<\/a>,\u201d which would block federal funds from being used to facilitate \u201cthe invasion, annexation, purchase, or other form of acquisition of Greenland\u201d by the U.S. government. The bill would also prevent a surge of troops to the island.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreenland is not for sale, not for conquest, and not a bargaining chip,\u201d said Gomez.\u00a0\u201cThreatening to seize territory from an ally undermines basic\u00a0international\u00a0law and destabilizes one of the United States\u00a0and the world\u2019s\u00a0most important alliances\u00a0in\u00a0NATO.
