Instead, this decision has created more division and for that we express our sincere apologies,\u201d the board wrote in its statement on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"><sub class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/sub><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cMany authors have since announced they will no longer appear at Adelaide Writers\u2019 Week 2026 and it is the Adelaide Festival\u2019s position that the event can no longer go ahead as scheduled for this year. This is a deeply regrettable outcome.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe recognise and deeply regret the distress this decision has caused to our audience, artists and writers, donors, corporate partners, the government and our own staff and people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Adelaide festival board said that with the cancellation of Adelaide writers\u2019 week, a new board would focus on \u201censuring a successful Adelaide festival proceeds in a way which safeguards the long and rich cultural legacy of our state but also protects the hardworking staff delivering this important event\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The statement came hours after the AWW director, Louise Adler, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/2026\/jan\/13\/louise-adler-resigns-as-director-of-adelaide-writers-week-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">announced her resignation in Guardian Australia<\/a>, writing: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2026\/jan\/13\/i-cannot-be-party-to-silencing-writers-which-is-why-i-am-resigning-as-director-of-adelaide-writers-week-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">\u201cI cannot be party to silencing writers.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Adler told Guardian Australia that the cancellation of AWW was \u201cno surprise\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt was untenable,\u201d she said. \u201cThere were 165 sessions and as of yesterday at about 4pm, only 12 events had a full complement of writers left. Seventy per cent of all the writers had withdrawn. You can\u2019t stitch that back together.
