{"id":11683,"date":"2026-01-12T19:03:26","date_gmt":"2026-01-12T19:03:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=11683"},"modified":"2026-01-12T19:03:26","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T19:03:26","slug":"fintech-firm-betterment-confirms-data-breach-after-hackers-send-fake-crypto-scam-notification-to-users","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=11683","title":{"rendered":"Fintech firm Betterment confirms data breach after hackers send fake crypto scam notification to users"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Automated investment platform <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/startup-battlefield\/company\/betterment\/\">Betterment<\/a> has confirmed that hackers broke into some of its systems last week and accessed the personal information of an undisclosed number of its customers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an email sent on Monday, which TechCrunch has seen, Betterment said that hackers gained access to some company systems on January 9 by way of a social engineering attack, which involved \u201cthird-party platforms\u201d that the company uses for marketing and operations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company said customer names, email addresses and postal addresses, phone numbers, and dates of birth were compromised in the attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With this access, hackers were able to send a fraudulent notification to users, claiming to triple the value of their crypto by sending $10,000 to a wallet controlled by the attacker, as reported by <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/860106\/betterment-crypto-scam-notification\">The Verge<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Betterment, which <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.betterment.com\/crypto\">allows customers<\/a> to invest in crypto, also <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.betterment.com\/customer-update\">published an announcement<\/a> about the breach on its website, but did not disclose how many customers were targeted, nor how many had their personal information accessed, stolen, or seen by the hackers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Betterment added that it detected the attack on the same day and \u201cimmediately revoked the unauthorized access and launched a comprehensive investigation, which is ongoing,\u201d with the help of an unspecified cybersecurity firm.
