US president Donald Trump<\/a> has repeated overnight that the US would take Greenland \u201cone way or the other,\u201d as he mocked its defence as \u201ctwo dog sleds,\u201d and stressed that otherwise Russia and China would move to claim the territory.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Speaking with reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said that he was open to making a deal on Greenland<\/a> in principle, but insisted \u201cone way or the other, we are going to have Greenland.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIf we don\u2019t take Greenland,<\/strong> Russia or China will, and I\u2019m not letting that happen,<\/strong>\u201d he said, despite no obvious interest from either of the two countries.<\/p>\n

Trump also mocked Greenland\u2019s defence saying it consists of \u201ctwo dog sleds,\u201d<\/strong> facing Russian and Chinese \u201cdestroyers and submarines all over the place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked about the potential impact on Nato, Trump shrugged it off,<\/strong> saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it affects Nato, it affects Nato.<\/strong> But you know, they need us much more than we need them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He also claimed that he \u201csaved\u201d the alliance by pushing for increased defence spending,<\/strong> and said he was working on ending the Russian invasion of Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

(Our usual sympathies go to the Danish Trump night watcher<\/a>, who had to watch this and report back to the country\u2019s authorities.)<\/em><\/p>\n

His comments came hours after the Danish prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, warned that Denmark<\/a> is at a \u201cfateful moment\u201d amid Trump\u2019s threats to take over Greenland,<\/strong> accusing the US of potentially turning its back on Nato.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are at a crossroads, and this is a fateful moment,\u201d said Frederiksen.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is at stake is bigger than what the eye can see,<\/strong> because if what we experience from the Americans is that they are actually turning their backs on the western alliance, that they are turning their backs on our Nato cooperation by threatening an ally, which we have not experienced before, then everything will stop.\u201d<\/p>\n
