{"id":10815,"date":"2026-01-09T12:18:30","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T12:18:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=10815"},"modified":"2026-01-09T12:18:30","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T12:18:30","slug":"trump-claims-he-has-cancelled-second-wave-of-attacks-on-venezuela-us-attack-on-venezuela","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=10815","title":{"rendered":"Trump claims he has cancelled second wave of attacks on Venezuela | US attack on Venezuela"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Donald Trump has claimed that he cancelled a second wave of attacks on Venezuela because it was cooperating with the US on oil infrastructure and had released political prisoners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The US president said early on Friday that he cancelled planned military action in recognition that the authorities in Caracas had released \u201clarge numbers\u201d of prisoners and were \u201cseeking peace\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis is a very important and smart gesture,\u201d Trump posted on social media. \u201cThe USA and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/venezuela\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Venezuela<\/a> are working well together, especially as it pertains to rebuilding, in a much bigger, better, and more modern form, their oil and gas infrastructure. Because of this cooperation, I have cancelled the previously expected second Wave of Attacks, which looks like it will not be needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trump did not elaborate on the alleged plan for fresh strikes but said the US navy armada in the Caribbean would remain, leaving Washington with the ability to attack Venezuela at short notice. \u201cAll ships will stay in place for safety and security purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said he would meet American oil industry figures later on Friday. \u201cAt least 100 Billion Dollars will be invested by BIG OIL, all of whom I will be meeting with today at the White House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Earlier, Venezuela <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jan\/08\/venezuela-to-release-important-number-of-detainees\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">announced the release<\/a> of an \u201cimportant number\u201d of detainees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In the hours that followed, however, human rights organisations were able to confirm only about a dozen releases and are pressing the regime to free all political prisoners, whom they estimate number between 800 and 1,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The former opposition candidate Enrique M\u00e1rquez was among those released from prison, according to an opposition statement. \u201cIt\u2019s all over now,\u201d M\u00e1rquez said in a video taken by a local journalist who accompanied him and his wife, as well as another freed nationality, who it said were \u201cpreparing to travel to Spain with assistance from our embassy in Caracas\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Thursday, Trump said he planned soon to meet the Venezuelan opposition leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/maria-corina-machado\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Mar\u00eda Corina Machado<\/a>, in the wake of the 3 January raid that captured Venezuela\u2019s president, Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, and threatened land strikes against drug cartels in Latin America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Since that operation the future governance of the South American country has remained an open question, with Trump over the weekend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jan\/06\/venezuela-opposition-maria-corina-machado-setback-trump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">dismissing the idea of working with Machado<\/a>, saying \u201cshe doesn\u2019t have the support within or the respect within the country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But in a Fox News interview on Thursday, the US president said Machado was \u201ccoming in next week sometime\u201d, adding that \u201cI look forward to saying hello to her\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Asked whether he would accept Machado\u2019s Nobel peace prize if she gave it to him, Trump said: \u201cI\u2019ve heard that she wants to do that. The message was that they were already preparing something, planning it \u2013 a military operation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Asked whether he feared suffering the same fate as Maduro, Petro said: \u201cUndoubtedly. Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, or any president in the world, can be removed if they do not align with certain interests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Petro addressed crowds in Bogot\u00e1 at one of several demonstrations across the country that he called for last Wednesday. The protests, Petro said, were a defence against Trump\u2019s threats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cBut what we use here is popular defence, and that is why I called for popular resistance on Wednesday,\u201d he said, adding that he believed the White House\u2019s threat against Colombia had, for now, \u201cbeen frozen \u2013 but I could be mistaken\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trump told Fox News that it would take time for Venezuela to get to a place where it can hold elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/dec\/19\/us-venezuela-alleged-drug-boats-strikes-pacific-death-toll-increases\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">US strikes on alleged drug boats<\/a> in the eastern Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea have killed more than 100 people since they began in September. They formed part of a concerted pressure campaign on Maduro that culminated in his dramatic abduction by US forces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">As part of that campaign, the US was understood to have conducted a strike on a docking area inside Venezuela, but land strikes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jan\/04\/naked-imperialism-how-trump-intervention-in-venezuela-is-a-return-to-form-for-the-us\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">would mark a significant escalation<\/a>, with suggestions they could target cartels in Mexico.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe are going to start now hitting land with regard to the cartels.
