The State Department said Wednesday that it has suspended all U.S. assistance to Somalia\u2019s federal government over allegations that Somali officials destroyed an American-funded warehouse belonging to the World Food Program and seized 76 metric tons of\u00a0food aid intended for impoverished civilians.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe Trump Administration has a zero-tolerance policy for waste, theft, and diversion of life-saving assistance,\u201d the department said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe State Department has paused all ongoing U.S. assistance programs which benefit the Somali Federal Government,\u201d it said. \u201cAny resumption of assistance will be dependent upon the Somali Federal Government, taking accountability for its unacceptable actions and taking appropriate remedial steps.\u201d<\/p>\n

The suspension comes as the Trump administration has ratcheted up\u00a0criticism of Somali refugees and migrants\u00a0in the United States, including over well-publicized\u00a0fraud allegations involving child care centers\u00a0in Minnesota. It has slapped significant\u00a0restrictions on Somalis wanting to come to the U.S.\u00a0and made it difficult for those already in the United States to stay.<\/p>\n

It was not immediately clear how much assistance would be affected by the suspension because the Trump administration has slashed foreign aid expenditures,\u00a0dismantled the U.S. Agency for International Development\u00a0and not released new country-by-country data.<\/p>\n

The U.S. had provided $770 million in assistance for projects in Somalia during the last year of Democratic President Joe Biden\u2019s administration, but only a fraction of that went directly to the government.<\/p>\n

A senior State Department official said Wednesday the department is \u201cundertaking a thoughtful and individualized review to determine which ongoing assistance programs directly or indirectly benefit the Somali Federal Government and to take appropriate actions to pause, redirect or terminate such programs.\u201d<\/p>\n

The official said Somalia had long been \u201ca black hole of poorly overseen U.S. assistance\u201d and that the Trump administration is taking steps to terminate fraud-prone programs there.<\/p>\n

The official said the administration ordered the suspension after authorities at the Mogadishu Port demolished the WFP warehouse at the direction of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud \u201cwith no prior notification or coordination with international donor countries, including the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private reporting from American diplomats in the region.<\/p>\n

Located in the Horn of Africa, Somalia is\u00a0one of the world\u2019s poorest nations\u00a0and has been\u00a0beset by chronic strife\u00a0and insecurity exacerbated by multiple natural disasters, including severe droughts, for decades.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
